I travelled with public transport this evening and met... a group of CPUT students. Our journey took us to all the way to District Six, and I got some insight into their world. I was impressed with their study choices such as civil engineering and accounting. Some hope to become entrepreneurs. The students shared that NSFAS was supporting their studies. Beyond fees, they are also provided with residence fees, books, food and a travel allowance. They however need laptops. They did tell me they are in dire need of laptops for their studies. The energy, passion and optimism of these young South Africans was inspiring.show more

Today, students were interrupted from their midterm studies for... several hours by loud music and prayers outside their windows. Harvard's historic Quincy Courtyard had been turned into a bazaar selling Hijabs, Burqas and Qurans for an Eid Mubarak celebration hosted by Harvard’s Islamic Society. Large prayer mats covered the grass, speakers blasted Islamic music, and the event (open to the public) attracted dozens of unvetted strangers who roamed outside student dorms. Security intervened only once during the “celebration,” when three Harvard security officers told one of our members he was not allowed to photograph what was happening. The Hidden Language of Diffusion Models paper page: tackle... the challenge of understanding concept representations in text-to-image models by decomposing an input text prompt into a small set of interpretable elements. This is achieved by learning a pseudo-token that is a sparse weighted combination of tokens from the model's vocabulary, with the objective of reconstructing the images generated for the given concept. Applied over the state-of-the-art Stable Diffusion model, this decomposition reveals non-trivial and surprising structures in the representations of concepts. For example, we find that some concepts such as "a president" or "a composer" are dominated by specific instances (e.g., "Obama", "Biden") and their interpolations. Other concepts, such as "happiness" combine associated terms that can be concrete ("family", "laughter") or abstract ("friendship", "emotion"). In addition to peering into the inner workings of Stable Diffusion, our method also enables applications such as single-image decomposition to tokens, bias detection and mitigation, and semantic image manipulationshow more

BREAKING | Hundreds of international students and supporters are... demonstrating in Mississauga today. They are protesting deportation orders levelled against students that were unknowing victims of bogus acceptance letters from their immigration consultant in India. A Conservative Party motion, at the federal government's immigration committee, to temporarily suspend the deportations until claims are fully investigated was delayed by the committee in a 6-5 vote. Students at St. George’s school in Nairobi are on... strike after one of their comrades was assaulted by a teacher for being outside viewing the eclipse. The students slept outside making noise, calling for justice. Police were overwhelmed by the students and could not contain the protest. Parents have arrived at the school in a bid to find a solution but what is clear is that the winds of change are blowing even in schools.
