Introducing ASAL: Automating the Search for Artificial Life with... Foundation Models Artificial Life (ALife) research holds key insights that can transform and accelerate progress in AI. By speeding up ALife discovery with AI, we accelerate our understanding of emergence, evolution, and intelligence–core principles that can inspire the next generation of AI systems! We proudly collaborated with MIT, OpenAI, Swiss AI Lab IDSIA, and Ken Stanley on this exciting project. Instead of tediously hand-designing every tiny rule of an Alife simulation, simply describe the space of simulations to search over, and ASAL will automatically discover the most interesting and open-ended artificial lifeforms! Because of the generality of foundation models, ASAL can discover new lifeforms across a diverse range of seminal ALife simulations, including Boids, Particle Life, Game of Life, Lenia, and Neural Cellular Automata. ASAL even discovered novel cellular automata rules that are more open-ended and expressive than the original Conway’s Game of Life. We believe this new paradigm may reignite ALife research by overcoming the bottleneck of manually designed simulations, thus advancing beyond the limits of human ingenuity.show more

According to Defence Blog, the work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Mesa, Arizona, and will continue until May 30, 2032. The contract includes financing under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program from three partner countries. The document states that Poland, Egypt, and Kuwait have allocated more than $2.29 billion toward this agreement. These three countries have joined a multi-year procurement program, although details regarding delivery schedules for each customer have not been disclosed. The AH-64E Apache is the latest modification of the attack helicopter, featuring enhanced weaponry, modern electronics, and expanded capabilities for cooperation with unmanned systems. That San Francisco firefighter who badly injured another firefighter... with a heavy, 15-inch hydrant wrench will NOT face felony assault charges. Today, Alameda Superior Court Judge Sharon Djemal ordered 49-year-old Robert Muhammad into mental health diversion. He'll have to continue therapy every two weeks for two years and check in periodically with the court. As you see in the video today, neither Muhammad nor his defense attorney, Jim Bustamente, would comment on camera. The courtroom was packed with about 50 friends and supporters for Muhammad, including current SFFD brass. Gabriel Shin suffered two broken arms, a concussion, and PTSD from the January 2022 attack. Court records show Muhammad swung the wrench at Shin's head 10-12 times and only stopped when a neighbor, who happened to be a human trafficking investigator, pulled her gun and ordered Muhammad to stop. Shin described the attack to the judge, but did not wait for the decision. He told me later by phone he didn't want to see a lot of gladhanding, and thought the decision seemed to be a foregone conclusion. Shin has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Muhammad and the fire department for Battery, Assault, Race and Color Discrimination, Disability Discrimination, Retaliation and more.
