These birds are trapped from fields and sold on... the side of the road for people to buy, so that they can release them for “merit”. They lose their flocks, many die and those that are released after paying the fee, die in the new area as they are not able to survive alone and some are also killed by other birds and animals in the new area. Sadly there are no laws to protect them. The continuous cycle of buying them means more are caught and the buyer also becomes a part of and a supporter of this cruel cycle.
