My initial problem with Liquid Glass was that it... was terrible for accessibility despite how beautiful it looks it certain places. There is literally only one way to solve this readability issue – make the glass frosted/opaque. And from the public backlash that Apple received it was pretty obvious that it was a matter of time before they made this change. The problem now is that when you make it opaque, it barely looks any different from iOS 18, yet it keeps eating up resources and draining your battery. 3 betas in, and I still feel like this design direction was a big mistake.show more

Thanks to an Android app called Liquid Glass, I... can finally achieve an almost limitless Liquid Glass lock screen experience on One UI. It supports depth effects, lets you tweak all kinds of glass parameters, and even allows full font customization. You can use virtually any font you download, giving you an incredible level of freedom. The results are genuinely stunning. The biggest downside is that the setup is quite complicated. Adjusting the clock, in particular, takes a lot of steps instead of being something you can edit directly, so the learning curve is fairly steep. I really hope the developer can make the customization process more intuitive in future updates, and add more language options, especially Chinese, so more users can enjoy it.show more

A memory like this: I’ve been exploring Liquid Glass... for at least one year now, recreating many versions exactly nine all built with totally different techniques. I came to a realization. iOS 26, at least for me, missed part of the purpose. Liquid Glass is often used as decoration, while refraction could become the core of the user experience. Not an embellishment, but interaction itself. By turning a glass panel, refraction reveals something else: another app, another image, another portal. That’s when it clicked. Seems like a good opportunity to share a trick... I used on the React Aria website to make headings scale to fit the viewport on mobile, even with SSR. I used fontkit, a library I wrote 10 years ago to parse fonts and layout glyphs, to measure the width of the heading at build time in the "em" unit. width = font.layout('DateRangePicker').advanceWidth / font.unitsPerEm This is a size independent measurement using the font's internal metrics. When multiplied by any font size, you get the pixel width of the text. To calculate the font size, set this as a CSS variable and divide the target width (100vw minus padding). Clamp to make sure it doesn't get too big or small. font-size: clamp(35px, (100vw - 32px) / var(--text-width), 55px) And tada! You have perfectly scaling text no matter the viewport size. 🎉show more
