This morning, I conducted an unannounced inspection at Queens... College, Yaba, Lagos, to assess its current infrastructure, leadership, and the welfare of the students. Upon my arrival at 7:45 AM, I was pleased to see the majority of students lining up for assembly, with both the academic and non-academic staff, including the principal, already present and ready to begin the school day. During my visit, I held separate discussions with students, teachers, and the principal to better understand their challenges and needs. It is clear that the school requires significant infrastructural improvements to adequately and safely accommodate its students and staff. Queens College, established almost 100 years ago, has long surpassed its original capacity. To ensure that our students benefit from an appropriate student-to-teacher ratio, sufficient resources, and adequate facilities for boarding and feeding, we must maintain a standard capacity across all Unity Schools and Federal Government Colleges. In line with our commitment to promoting quality assurance in education, the Federal Ministry of Education will collaborate with Principal Obabori and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to redesign, refurbish, and build new facilities at Queens College, including a library, dining areas, hostels, and classrooms. Over the next several months, I will be conducting unannounced visits to other Unity Schools and Federal Colleges. OPERATION HADIN KAI FOILS MASS ABDUCTION ATTEMPT AT FGGC... MONGUNO Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in collaboration with personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), successfully foiled an attempted mass abduction by ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, at about 0130 hours (1:30 a.m.) on 19 July 2026. The FGGC facility is currently being utilized by the Borno State Government as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno. The terrorists reportedly gained access to the facility with the assistance of suspected collaborators in an attempt to abduct students. Alert security personnel immediately engaged the terrorists with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, effectively stalling their advance with Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) immediately reinforcing the school. Confronted by the superior combat capability and determined resistance of the security forces, the terrorists were forced to abandon their criminal mission and flee in confusion without achieving their objective. During the encounter, parts of the school infrastructure sustained damage but the attempt was well contained by troops in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force personnel. Following the operation, troops successfully rescued and evacuated all 46 students to Kinnasara Barracks, Monguno, where they received immediate medical assessment and appropriate care. All rescued students have been confirmed medically stable and no student was abducted. Regrettably, some students were fatally struck by the sporadic gunfire from the terrorists during the firefight. Operation HADIN KAI extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reassures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the lives of residents and protect critical public institutions across the North East in liaison with the Borno State Government. Exploitation of the incident is ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspected collaborators, while troops and other security agencies are actively tracking the fleeing terrorists. I had the opportunity to learn about the First Amendment (my fav)and the importance of a free press through Kevin Goldberg, First Amendment Specialist at the Freedom Forum, who discusses the role of a free press in a democratic society and the constitutional protections that safeguard it in the United States. The First Amendment protects five fundamental freedoms,religion, speech, the press, peaceful assembly, and the right to petition the government. These freedoms enable citizens to question authority, express dissent, expose injustice, and hold those in power accountable. A free press, in particular, is indispensable to democracy because it informs the public and scrutinises the exercise of power. The Freedom Forum is a financially independent, non-partisan, international organisation dedicated to free press, free speech, and free spirit for all people. Through educational programmes, conferences, publishing, broadcasting, training, research, and partnerships, it works to advance these freedoms. My visit to the United States Capitol brought these ideas into sharper focus. For someone committed to human rights and social justice, the First Amendment offers an important reminder that democracy is about more than elections and institutions. It is also about protecting the right to question, dissent, organise, and demand accountability. For India, the question is not merely whether these freedoms exist in the Constitution, but how effectively they are protected in practice. The freedom of journalists to scrutinise governments, the right of citizens to criticise those in power, and the ability of marginalised communities to make their voices heard are essential to a functioning democracy.
