Of course, there was so much happiness and fun... but lot's of ego and trauma because I did not know how to control my emotions or my thinking. This video brought joyful tears to my eyes this... morning. Two years ago, my nanny decided to leave abruptly. I was rotating through general surgery with heavy patient load, frequent calls, and needed to stay in the hospital for several days during unit calls and patients that required us to operate till 2am. My husband had just closed for the year. So I had to drop our 10-month-old with him for about 3 weeks before I got another nanny. He bathed her. Fed her. Washed her hair. Spent quality time with her while I was at work. I didn't have to choose between my career and my child because he stepped up. This morning, that little girl, now 3 years old, knocked on my door and said: "Mummy, open the door. I want to greet you and Daddy." Oh, my word! Fully cohesive. Fully intentional. I can't believe how much she's grown. People talk about "having it all" like it's something you do alone. It's not. You can be an excellent surgeon AND an excellent mother, but not without a strong support system. Who you marry matters because they hold the line when you can't. I'm grateful for this man. And for the bond he built with our daughter when I couldn't be there. I can't even be jealous.
