Can't help but smile at this one. One of... those stories I think we are going to look back and laugh at one day. ⬇️ James Voorhies was an uncommitted catcher (and a very good one) just over a year ago. Hadn't thrown a varsity inning on the mound. In October going into his senior year I played catch with him at the local elementary school. We threw on a crabgrass field and I told him after 15 minutes of playing catch that his arm, body type, and feel for the baseball were far too advanced for him to not be on the mound. James agreed to start throwing bullpens and "give it a shot". 3 weeks later I did a workout with some of our clients and James threw a bullpen on the game mound. He was 85-87 and absolutely pounded the zone. Threw 3 of the dirtiest changeups I’ve seen (we had played with a kick-change grip a few weeks prior). I had never seen him throw against hitters. Saw a 15 minute catch play session and his first bullpen in years. I Immediately sent the video to a handful of Division 1 programs that were on his list and gave them the scoop. “He's got zero track record but everything about him looks like a future pro arm”. Responses ranged anywhere from excitement to skepticism, which was 100% to be expected. Fast forward a few months to February... CSUN pulled the trigger before his high school season even started and James went on to post a 1.09 ERA, 83 IP, 60 H, 21 BB, and 83 K in his first year of pitching to help take College Park HS to the NCS championship. So here we are essentially 1 year after Jimmy started pitching full time and he’s up to 94 mph as a true freshman, with a win and a save in his first two collegiate appearances with 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 13 K. Pretty cool story of a guy going “all in” on something new and different, and a college program taking a chance on a guy that they see future potential in. But the best part of this story and biggest point I want to make is that I firmly believe the reason Jimmy V was the guy that CSUN took a shot on was because of his makeup, work ethic, character, and competitiveness. Jimmy is one of the best “makeup” guys I’ve ever recruited or advised. He is the perfect combination of humble and confident and was the QB/captain of his football team in high school. Jimmy made it easy for CSUN to say “that’s the guy we want to take a chance on.” And yes, it helped that he was 6’4” and a big time multi-sport athlete with a ton of upside. It fires me up to watch Jimmy doing his thing at a very high level. While he won't toe the rubber this spring for... the Hoosiers, RHP Luke Sinnard (Indiana Baseball) is an arm to be familiar with come July. Began his college career at Western Kentucky, but blossomed last year as a Sophomore at Indiana and pitched his way to a 4.27 ERA with 114 Ks (led the Big Ten) to just 25 BB across 86.1 IP. Earned a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Towering, workhorse frame at 6'8" and 230-lbs. Sinnard attacks from an ultra high-three quarter slot and possesses an outlier release height north of 7-feet. Somewhat of a deep pull here, but his arm slot is a little reminiscent of former College of Charleston RHP William Privette, though not as sling-shotty or true OTT. His FB sits in the 91-94 range (T96) but it plays up thanks to the carry Sinnard is able to get on it through the zone. Last year, it averaged over 2,500 RPMs and over 19" of IVB. Sinnard's low-80s CB is a true bat-misser. Flashes immense depth and almost true 12-to-6 shape with some teeth. He has good feel for the pitch and it is effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. Held opponents to a .118 average and generated a 46% miss rate last spring. Also features an effective high-80s Cut/SL hybrid. Boasts late lateral life with a touch of depth. Gets under the hands of LHH. Another pitch that Sinnard has plus control of. Lastly, Sinnard throws a low-80s Split/CH. Feel for it is inconsistent, but it gets good separation off the FB and at times flashed tumbling life. It's an okay 4th offering. Sinnard has pro-level starter written all over him and even though you won't see him this season, he profiles as a potential 4th-7th round pick in this year's Draft. (📽️: Indiana Baseball)show more

Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist Baseball) has as much upside... as anyone in the 2025 draft. With question marks early on about how he'd fare against the top arms in the country on the Cape, "Doomey" proved quickly as one of the best players in the summer league circuit. His hands start high with the bat coiled behind his head. While a somewhat unorthodox approach, he's able to get his bat head up and hands lowered upon loading. It's an explosive operation with elite bat speed, averaging as much as 79.9 mph in the CCBL (per @Blast_Bsbl). It's a consistent swing making hard contact and driving the ball to both gaps (led the CCBL with 12 2B). The quick hip hinge allows for a powerful on-time rotation through the ball as he barrels the ball at a high clip (up to 30.4% this summer per Joe Doyle). Then there's the speed. Doomey set the Brewster Whitecap SB record with 26 (27 ATT) in 36 G. His 96.2% success rate is the highest in league history for someone with 20+ steals in a season (per League Statistician). He gets good jumps on the base paths and good reads off the bat defensively. There is some swing and miss to his game. He walks at an average rate (8.6 BB% in the CCBL) and struck out just 12.9% of the time in the WAC but that went up to 21.7% this summer. There's some chase low out of the zone vs break and did way more damage vs LHP (.435/.469/.783; .348 ISO) than RHP (.247/.333/.337; .090 ISO). A true five-tool talent, Nick Dumesnil made a name for himself this summer on the Cape, and will soon be at the top of many teams' draft boards next July.show more

Contrail lesson! 1. “Chemtrails” don’t exist. Just to get... that out of the way. 2. Observe the satellite loop and Skew-T chart. In the IR satellite loop you can see yesterday, the West Coast had a decent short wave ridge suppressing moisture over California and Nevada. Today, you can see moisture from a low pressure over the Pacific spilling over the ridge that is now moving east of California. This is upper level moisture ADVECTING into the area. This upper level moisture is mainly above the 500mb level, or 20,000ft. 3. Now observe the Skew-T chart. Particularly clue into the 300mb level. This is a perfect example of what I talk about all the time, and why it’s important to pay attention to the 300mb level. This moisture layer is advecting particularly at the 300mb level, and synoptic scale cirrus development, and advection, typically occurs at 300mb. This is key because aircraft are flying at and above the 300mb level. 4. So, lastly, observe the pictures that I took of the sky over northern Nevada at the time of this post. You can see the layer of cirrus as well as contrails persisting in that moisture layer, exactly as depicted in the satellite shot AND confirmed by the Skew-T chart. Keep in mind that temperatures at this level of the atmosphere are typically -20 to -50°C. In this case, you can see that the temperature at 300mb is -40°C and relative humidities at this level are far different than what you experience at the surface. Any decrease in the gap between temperature and dewpoint at this level can significantly increase the relative humidity. This is why it’s referred to as “relative”because it’s far different than temperatures and dew points at the surface. So, to bring it all together, aircraft flying at these altitudes, which most commercial and military aircraft do, injecting warm, moist air from the engines rapidly into the super cooled environment, not only instantly form contrails, but when relative humidities are as depicted in this example, will enable contrails to persist for hours at a time supported by the moisture existing in that layer. This is what causes persistent contrails. These ARE NOT “chemtrails” and because they persist, does not, and will not ever, make them “chemtrails.” Now that you all needed your government to tell you that climate change was a hoax and I’ve been telling you for years that the “Geoengineering” and “chemtrail” nonsense are propaganda directly related to the climate change hoax, hopefully you can take some time to learn the basics of the atmosphere and understand what I’m showing you here, and how it works, so you’re not fooled by climate propaganda going forward. The Red Sox also acquired prospect OF Carlos Gutierrez... (🔜) from the Giants in the deal that sent INF Marcelo Mayer back to the west coast. Gutierrez, 21, has been exceptional with San Francisco's High-A squad this season: ⚾️ .271 BA ⚾️ .826 OPS ⚾️ 15% BB / 20% K ⚾️ 124 wRC+ Gutierrez boasts an advanced approach at the plate, rarely chasing and limiting whiffs well. Baseball America also notes he rakes against fastballs. As far as the rest of the player? He's certainly a plus hit over power profile for now. The Red Sox have done a fantastic job of acquiring players with similar profiles, putting them on a bat speed program, and watching the EV90s (as well as SLG) take off. Enddy Azocar was one of those guys. Gutierrez is a more than capable defender in CF. He's got a good enough arm to stick there long term. He also runs very well (55-60 grade)... the 21-year-old has swiped 26 bases already this season. Gutierrez was signed by the Giants as an IAFA back in 2023 out of Mexico. He won't be Rule 5 eligible until 2027. The Red Sox lost a super high ceiling outfielder in Azocar earlier, but immediately replaced him with a sneaky good player in Gutierrez. Off the bat, I really like this acquisition and I see the vision. Good all-around tools and maybe some more pop on the way. Solid add.show more

OF Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist Baseball) is one of... the higher upside college bats in this year's Draft. Showed flashes across a limited sample as a Freshman, but exploded last year to the tune of a .362/.440/.702 slash line with 40 XBH (19 HRs) and 45 RBIs across 61 games. Proceeded to have an excellent summer on the Cape in which he hit .311/.378/.489 with a league-leading 12 2B, 4 HR, 15 RBIs and a league-leading 26 SB in 36 games. Strong, athletic frame at 6'2" and 205-pounds. Big league body. Slightly wide base in the box with a somewhat high handset (lowered his hands as the summer went on, was ultra-high at school with his bat pointed almost straight down behind his back shoulder. Drew Burress-ish look). Ultra-small stride that is more of a toe tap than anything else. Hands already start pretty far back, though they drift slightly in his load. Engaged lower-half, especially his back side. Easy plus bat speed. Dumesnil showed the ability to drive the baseball to all fields both at school and on the Cape. Would give his power a 55 overall, but it's a 6 to the pull side. Top spun a 2-run HR (EV of 106) off the scoreboard in the ASG. Very curious to monitor how his hit tool progresses this spring. There's a present feel for the barrel and his bat-to-ball skills are plus (ovr. IZ contact rate of 90%, including 93% and 91% against FB and SL, respectively). Will certainly need to shore up his pitch recognition skills and swing decisions in order to maximize his offensive upside. Some chase up/out against FB, down/out against secondaries. Key will be doing a better job of picking up spin out of the hand. Plus runner—who most importantly knows HOW to run—whose speed translates on both sides of the baseball. Chaos-causer on the bases, Dumesnil's speed also gives him the opportunity to take an extra base on a ball in the gap or down the line. I thought his instincts in CF got better as the summer went on. Dumesnil's speed and elite athleticism allow him to cover plenty of ground and his arm is average, I'm sure he'll get the opportunity to prove he can stick there in pro ball. Chance he could move off and end up at a corner eventually. Key for Dumesnil is adding polish to his hit tool. There is 5-tool upside (key word) with him and he can impact the game in a number of ways. Potential first round pick this July. (📽️: California Baptist Baseball)show more

As story artists, we have to live in the scenes that we work on for hours each day. And this film (from peter brown! ‘s beautiful book) gave me a place to live. In scenes and a story that could honor my mom, and all mothers. And that is just a gift that I can never repay any of you for. I still ask myself sometimes, how did I get so lucky that they offered this to me? But I’m so glad they did because I think I needed this project even more than it needed me. On one of my last days in London watching the record of Kris Bowers’ beautiful score, sitting in the converted church that is Air Studios, I could somehow feel my mom speaking to me through the words of the lovely choir: I’m gonna live forever in you, long as the sky and oceans are blue, I’ll always love you and I’ll never stop. I’ll always be there even when I’m not.” And everything came full circle. I miss you Mom. I hope that this film will always stand as a love letter to all moms. As it was the place I put all of my unexpressed love for you. Was very impressed on Friday by East Carolina RHP... Trey Yesavage, who allowed just 1 ER and struck out 11 across 6 IP. FB sat 93-96, topped out at 97. Jumped out of the hand from his near over-the-top slot. Plenty of carry through the zone, shape of the pitch is outstanding. Control and command of it were both impressive, threw it for strikes 73% of the time. 55, borderline 60 pitch. Mixed in two distinct breaking balls with a high-70s CB and mid-80s SL. It's clear on Friday he didn't have the best feel for his CB. Threw a couple good ones that flashed plenty of depth, but it lacked its usual sharp, downward bite. Will typically flash plus. Gyro SL was a lot better. Threw it with conviction, confidence in the pitch was there. Flashed late teeth with some depth, generated 7 whiffs. Would give it a 55. I was most impressed with his SPL-CH. Got nice separation off his heater with a 10+ MPH difference. Threw it to both LHH and RHH. Flashed ultra-late tumbling life; seemingly fell off a table ~1-2 feet in front of the plate. Kills spin really well. Maintained arm speed. Looked like a plus pitch. Yesavage this year has a 1.80 ERA with 19 Ks to just 3 BB across 10 IP. He is one of the premier college arms in this year's draft class and has first round upside. (📽️: ACC Network)show more

After 3 incredible years and 1.6M students later, my... journey at ALX Africa has come to an end. It has been a life-changing experience, during which I made a lot of friends, worked with an incredibly dedicated team, and met so many talented students. A few numbers. We scaled from a few thousand students to 1.6M students on our platform. Students loved it and many of them took more than one course: 4M total! For the famous #ALX_SE Software engineering program, our SE students made an average of 2,000 commits and our checker reviewed 180M of their projects. That’s 2B lines of code… and that was before Claude Code. They actually wrote these themselves (unless Kimba said otherwise :) A big thank you to all my SE team mates, I am so proud of what we have accomplished, and I will really miss you all. Thank you to Fred for the trust he put in me and always supporting my crazy new and disruptive ideas. Thank you to my students.
