So you have to 100% fill the meter to leave no room for contest error. Don't try to get the meter in the green window if it's large, because that can/will change. Try to COMPLETELY fill the meter, so that if the window does change, it'll still be 100% full, resulting in a Green (I think).show more

This is what I’m talking about. This isn’t to... highlight Bentancur. It’s how 90% of teams and players behave for I’d say 70% of the game. But what are we trying to achieve here? The best thing that can happen from any phase of play, is to score a goal. So that’s the overall objective. To do that, the ball at some stage has to go behind every single opposition player and space has to be exploited whether it’s big or small. But Bentancur here is waiting. Waiting for players to move. Waiting for opposition to move. But why would Newcastle move? They don’t need to break from their shape. But imagine what would happen if Bentancur travelled with the ball into those open spaces. Newcastle and spurs players aren’t just going to watch, it’s going to instigate a chain reaction of movement from both sides. And that will in turn break up shapes which creates gaps. Then it’s if you are confident and able to exploit. But just waiting doesn’t achieve it. Imagine the disruption you will cause if both the ball player, and off ball players look to provoke the opposition as opposed to rigidly stand in shape. It’s just logical. If you stay still. Why does the opposition need to move? So what pictures are changing? What gaps are you opening? What gaps are you exploiting? So how do you expect to score when to score a goal, gaps have to be exploited? It’s why when people say “it’s harder in modern football, there’s less space”. No there isn’t. There’s always space. You’re just seeing players less willing to provoke it and attack it.show more

An ode to the 7 Wood… I ignored the... hype for a long time. My male ego just didn’t let me give the 7 wood a try. With my hybrid struggling, I finally took the plunge a couple months ago. I can say with no hyperbole: It’s the best club ever. This is a tough stance and have to get the ball up fast. 195 yards out. Basically zero chance for me with an iron or hybrid. Here’s our 3-part progression: #1. 12 Seconds of Hell A continuous 4sec–4sec–4sec rep to teach layered ball pressure: 4 sec of ball tracing: hand above the ball (not across body), pressure passers, pop back on rips. 4 sec of live dribble: small space containment, stunt and recover. 4 sec of dead ball pressure: vocal pressure “DEAD DEAD DEAD,” limit vision, force back foot passes. #2. Man in the Middle A simple drill that goes back to childhood. 2 passers, 15 ft apart. No overhead passes. Defender must slap the ball to start each on-ball rep. If they force a deflection, errant pass, or movement from the receiver → passer is in the middle on defense. #3. Fake Game 1v1 with only 1 or 0 dribbles. Forces defenders to pressure and disrupt without getting blown by. If they sag too much, they give space for an easier shot or downhill free dribble. If they pressure, they learn to force wide and force tough shots. We call it HEAT. Every defender's heat is different, but everyone needs to impact the ball in some way.
