For international viewers, I’ve talked about Thai pronouns in... this series several times, so I won’t go into too much detail again. But there’s something in the preview that’s worth pointing out. In the next episode, Tinnakorn calls Phop “คุณ” (khun), a formal and emotionally distant way of addressing someone. It’s the same pronoun Tin used with Phop in EP3 and EP4, after they reunited but before their relationship had found its footing. After that, Tin never used it with Phop again. And at the end of EP8, when Tinnakorn meets Phop again at his workplace, he calls him “ร้อยเอกภพธีร์” (Captain Phopthee). This is especially interesting because “Captain Phopthee” is also the way Tinnakorn’s father has addressed Phop ever since he became a soldier, not as a respectful title, but with a slightly mocking, dismissive tone. So hearing Tinnakorn use the same form of address feels significant. It’s formal, distant, and completely stripped of the intimacy we’ve seen between them. And once again, this is something the subtitles may not fully convey. In English, “คุณ” simply becomes “you,” while “ร้อยเอกภพธีร์” becomes “Captain Phopthee.” But in Thai, the choice of how Tinnakorn addresses him carries a lot more emotional weight than the subtitles can show.
