Five observations from Day 2 of #Bengals camp: 1. Dexter Lawrence began his morning by joining the cornerbacks in their pre-practice warmups. The guy is a hoot. “I just show up every day with joy,” said Lawrence. “It goes fast. I’m already in year eight and I guess people can say that’s (my) prime, but I feel good and I just keep learning every day.”

Five observations from today's joint practice with the Bears: 1. After only playing three snaps against the Lions, Dexter Lawrence was a force, consistently collapsing the pocket and tipping a ball to himself tor an INT. “Yeah, it felt good going against another team for more than three plays," he said with a laugh. “Getting into a rhythm, seeing different people, different blocks — it's just different." “He's overwhelmingly strong with good hands and he's a very savvy player," said Ted Karras when asked about blocking Dexter. "You've got to be ready to go or he’ll dump you.”

Five observations from Day 4 of #Bengals camp: 1. It was a great day for the defense. On this play, Boye Mafe pressures Joe Burrow leading to an INT for Jalen Davis. “Today felt like going against the 2016 New England defense,” said Karras. “A lot of good players. A lot of grown men. They’re grown-ups and they know how to play. They’re long-time professionals and a little bit mean.” (By the way, the 2016 Patriots won the Super Bowl)

Five observations from #Bengals practice: 1. Mike Gesicki made a terrific one-handed catch, but I think Charlie Jones topped it moments later. “I know what I can do as a receiver,” said Jones. “If I get the chance; great. If not, I want to be the best returner in the league.”

4. I noted in May that WR Dohnte Meyers caught my eye in OTAs. The former Canadian Football League standout has made several catches in 11-on-11 periods. “Every opportunity is scarce,” said Meyers. “I believe that if you’re on a professional football team and they call your number, whatever that role is, you’re trying to maximize it and just show them that you can be trusted.”

Five observations from Day 1 of #Bengals training camp: 1. Kudos to Tee Higgins for signing the franchise tag and reporting for the start of camp. “Me personally, I didn’t want drama,” Tee said. “I want to be here with my guys. I love this team and I grew a love for this city.”

4. Landon Robinson is a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps after graduating from the Naval Academy last Friday. Today, he was among their last players off the practice field. “You’ve got to put the extra work in,” said Robinson. “I missed a few days last week and you’ve got to continue to get better every single day.” (Photo credit = Paul W. 4. According to PFF, the O-line of Orlando Brown Jr, Dylan Fairchild, Ted Karras, Dalton Risner, and Amarius Mims ranked 5th in the NFL in pass blocking grade over the final 7 weeks after Risner became the full-time starter at RG. “I sit here in front of you feeling as good about that group as I ever felt,” said OC Dan Pitcher. “You’ve got five guys that played together for the bulk of last season who played their best football as the season went on, and there are a lot of measures that demonstrate that they got better and better and better.”

4. Second year linebackers Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight are noticeably more vocal this year. “Unequivocally,” said Al Golden. “We threw them in the deep end. They fought, they battled, and somehow made their way home. I think the Cincinnati Bengals are going to be the benefactor and it’s certainly playing out that way this spring.”

Five observations from Day 8 of #Bengals camp: 1. Joe Burrow was cooking. Deep balls, off-platform throws, narrow window dimes. It was impressive. “Today was the best I’ve thrown the ball I felt like,” Joe said. “It’s getting better every day. I’m figuring things out as we go.”

Caught up with Sam Hubbard today for the first time since he announced his retirement. It was in conjunction with Fifth Third Day, kicking off a month of community service activities by Fifth Third Bank to feed the hungry across the bank’s 11-state footprint (my observations 🧵)…
