It's nicknamed "the Bottleneck" (گلوگاه), and is well deserved. The surrounding topography leaves no practical bypass route between central Iran and Bandar Abbas within a corridor more than 100 kilometers wide. Any alternative route would require a major detour, resulting in significantly higher transportation and fuel costs.
