Passengers sometimes hear an odd, rhythmic “thumping” just after... takeoff, when the gear is retracted. Particularly if seated near the front. That’s the nose gear, and the wheels being stopped once they get into the bay. Unlike the main gear, which applies some brakes before pulling in the wheels, the nose gear has no brakes installed. So, to stop the wheels, it pulls the gear up until the tires come in contact with “snubbers”. These are flexible strips w/ a bit of rubber mounted to them. As the tires come in contact, the snubbers slow & stop them. In the picture, you can see some rubber gets flung around the nose gear bay. Anyway, contact is not always perfect, so you sometimes get a rhythmic thumping as the wheels slow. Other times you may hear it as a constant sound for a few seconds that seems to slow down & change pitch…and slowing down is exactly what’s happening. Anyway, now you know what the sound right after takeoff is. We generally retract the gear immediately after confirming we have a rate of climb. “Positive rates (of climb), gear up”. Using none of our own gear and fair to say, they were fairly mediocre crops, not because of how they got drilled but because we didn’t have the timings right. But you have to start somewhere. Fast forward to today, we will have 150ac of arable in the ground by the middle of next week for summer harvest. All using our own gear. It might not be a 5 or 6 furrow plough and it’s not a 4-6m drill but it does our job just grand. Investing in our “new to us” gear has pushed the farm on more than anything. Yellow jackets, which usually nest underground and are often... disturbed by a lawn mower or chainsaw, are one of the most dangerous and aggressive insects around. (Haven’t done an Entomology post lately so figured I’d throw one on) Why are they so dangerous? Because they can rapidly and repeatedly sting. This is a video I took of one who had attacked a katydid. As you can see, even as the yellow jacket begins to feed on the katydid, he continues to rapidly “pop” the prey with his stinger, pumping the paralyzing venom into the katydid. I count around 10 full stings of the prey. When a person is stung by a yellow jacket the first time, it releases an “alert pheromone”, which signals to most of the other colony members that danger is present. A major swarm of yellow jackets will then proceed out of the nest and attack the person (or animal). It takes around 1500 stings to kill a grown adult and 300-400 to kill a child. These numbers are achieved quickly with 100-200 yellow jackets swarming. If a person is allergic, they can go into anaphylactic shock with just one sting. I’m all about “saving the bees” because of their pollination factor…but Yellowjackets are one species of insect that I would gladly eliminate because of their danger. If you see them flying around the ground, or a tree stump or some rail road ties in the landscape, avoid them at all costs.show more

Video iterations burn credits really fast. With a storyboard, I can tweak things shot by shot and catch issues early, which is way cheaper. It also makes the whole process more controllable. I can adjust each shot on its own, so the character, composition, and key elements stay consistent. Pacing gets figured out early. Once the storyboard is done, the flow is pretty much set. Recently discovered that the fresh smell of the earth... after rain has a technical name: Petrichor. Curious about its origins, I looked up the etymology. Apparently it was coined from: Petra = stone or rock Ichor = the fluid that flowed in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology instead of blood. So Petrichor roughly translates to something like “the blood of the stones” or “the essence flowing from rocks.” But all this doesn’t even begin to capture the emotions evoked in India, where we wait for the first monsoon showers with almost romantic anticipation.
