Before I was a soldier, I traveled frontline areas,... mostly in Donetsk Oblast, to bring food and water to civilians living under russian terror - for 2 years. Eventually I was evacuating people and animals more than I was bringing in aid. Julie (Pictured) was my friend Sergei’s dog. Sergei helped me find the animals and people in Sivers’k who needed help the most, in the areas of the city that was usually off limits. Julie was always with him as he was driving around helping the people of Sivers’k, his home town, now under constant shelling and FPV threat by the russians. On April 14th,2024 Sergei and three others were murdered by russians. Their only crime, being Ukrainian on Ukrainian soil. I found out through a telegram channel notification, “4 civilians killed in Sivers’k”. There were no names but I instantly knew he was gone. russians will call this land their own and say they are liberating these people but he was buried with a Ukrainian flag because he was a Ukrainian man in Ukraine. Two weeks later I went to visit his grave and I found Елка, russian for Christmas Tree, sitting 100m meters from his grave, waiting near the entrance of his usual place of work. Know that I say this with total love: what’s... wrong with planting palm trees and banana trees in NC is that you’re destroying the natural beauty of this state. Palm trees are only native to a very small portion of Brunswick county. Banana trees? They’re not native at all. When I was growing up finding a palm tree? That was like magic. It was an experience that left you breathless. Today, transplants and developers have planted them all over Wilmington. A place they didn’t exist at all 30 years ago. You know what’s been lost as a result? Gorgeous live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and miles of longleaf pine forests. And it’s not just Wilmington that suffers from this invasion. You can find palm trees planted all over the coastal plain - all the way up through Raeford. They’re a hideous and tacky eyesore that destroys what North Carolina is really supposed to look like and it’s a threat to our natural heritage. I’ve been running hard these past weeks, from D.C.... to New Jersey to states across the country. Long days. Too little sleep. Fired up by what’s happening in our nation. And yet, in the middle of all of it, I keep meeting people carrying burdens heavier than mine who still choose kindness. Recently, I went into a hot kitchen after an event to thank the staff preparing the food. One man was sweaty, clearly grinding through a long day. I thanked him and started to walk away when he stopped me and said: “Hey man, you okay? You look like you need a hug.” I was stunned. I came to encourage them, and somehow he saw me. Truth is, I did need that hug. That moment reminded me: kindness is power. Seeing people is power. Taking even 30 seconds to lift someone up can change their whole day. Today, check on someone. An update on these 11 puppies that were dumped... in a plastic storage container last September where they could barely move or breathe, in Alabama. They were all rescued and cared for and adopted out and are now being loved and living in their forever homes. So many evil people in the world. I guess at least you could say they cut holes out in the bin for air to get through. Please have your pets spayed or neutered and instead of bringing a bunny home this Spring or buying a dog from a pets store, maybe think of rescuing a dog and adopting one at your local shelter.
