Here’s the reality: Turkey is pissed at the Kurds... because the Kurds stopped ISIS head on, preventing an Islamic Caliphate from Syria into Iraq, the exact borders Turkey wants today. Had ISIS been successful, Turkey would have swooped in and taken over. That defeat began in Kobani in 2014, and Erdogan hasn’t forgotten. Turkey didn’t fight ISIS. Turkey didn’t fight al Qaeda. Turkey didn’t fight Assad. Turkey helped all these bad actors against the Kurds. Turkey even began to normalize ties with the Assad regime. Kurds are secular and are an obstacle to Turkey’s neo-Ottoman expansion plans. Had the Kurds been radical Islamists as Erdogan prefers, he would be their ally and would’ve taken them under Turkey’s wing and eventually absorb their land into Turkey. The pro-democracy secular Kurds also send the wrong message to Erdogan’s constituents, they’ll start asking questions, how can these stateless people gain so much in so little time? How can they not be defeated? How did they manage to create their own region right across Turkey’s borders? The Kurds made Erdogan look weak. For Erdogan, radical Islamic terrorists are not terrorists, they are fellow Muslims. For Erdogan and Turkey, the Kurds are the terrorists, no matter what. But the reality is, Kurds are survivors. There’s a reason every ethnic and religious minority in the Middle East has either disappeared or their numbers have decreased dramatically. The Kurds have gained in population, including in Turkey. The Kurds have established an army. The Kurds have implemented self-governance away from the status quo. This is despite the odds being against them. That’s why it’s crucial for freedom loving people around the world to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Kurds and against warmongering Islamist Turkey. The Turks won’t stop. The conflict between the Kurds and the Syrian government has sharply escalated in recent days. Authorities in Damascus, backed by Turkey, have launched a large-scale offensive against the SDF. Earlier, they took Kurdish districts of Aleppo, then captured Tabqa and key dams on the Euphrates, pushing Kurdish forces to the river’s northern and eastern banks. At the same time, armed Arab tribes turned against the SDF. As a result, the Kurds lost control of oil-rich areas near Deir ez-Zor, after which unrest also broke out in Raqqa — the former “capital” of ISIS. The Syrian army reached the gate of Raqqa city.... If they move in and take the city, the SDF will lose most of its leverage. The smart think to do would be to announce a complete withdrawal from all Arab-majority areas of Syria and to negotiate local security and local governance rights for Kurdish-majority areas. Six Kurds were stabbed with knives during a demonstration... in solidarity with the Kurdish people and the women of Rojava in Antwerp Belgium. This resurgence cannot be viewed in isolation. The rehabilitation and growing international tolerance of jihadist and Islamists actors in Syria, including Abu Mohammad al-Jolani and groups with deep roots in ISIS and al-Qaeda’s ideological ecosystem, have contributed to normalizing violent Islamist movements. This is a grave indication that Islamist extremism in Europe is once again translating into direct violence against political and ethnic minorities. When Kurdish demonstrators can be attacked openly in the streets, we must ask who will be next: women marching on International Women’s Day, or Jews, who for years have been targets of hatred and violence legitimized by jihadist ideology. When figures like Jolani are reframed as pragmatic political actors, it sends a dangerous signal: that jihadist violence can be laundered through geopolitics. This ideological normalization reverberates far beyond Syria, emboldening extremist networks and lone actors across Europe. At the same time, large parts of the political right have chosen to look away from the fact that ISIS is once again rebuilding its capacity, that prisons and camps have collapsed, and that the risk of renewed conflict and large-scale refugee flows is once again real and imminent. Today marks the second day of the World Cycling... Championships in #Rwanda. The world is watching our country with excitement,but many of us cannot ignore the serious human rights concerns at home or the credible #UN reports accusing the Government of Rwanda of backing the #M23 rebels in eastern Democratic republic of #Congo where countless civilians especially women and children have been killed or subjected to sexual violence. The contrast with #Russia’s war in #Ukraine is striking.When Russia invaded, governments and sporting bodies quickly imposed sanctions and banned #Russian athletes. Yet when #Rwanda is accused of fueling a deadly conflict across its border, the international reaction is far more muted. To me, this feels like a double standard and yes, it raises the painful question of racism. Are the lives of #Black #African people in #Congo valued less than the lives of #Europeans ? I am not asking the world to turn its back on Rwanda or on sport. I am asking for consistency. If human rights truly matter, then the same principles should apply whether the victims are in #Europe or in #Africa.
