Going to the Utah Football this week, I parked... on top of a parking structure directly east of Allegiant stadium. There was a dude in a silver 2000s era Tacoma, set up with a bipod, camera, and in full tactical gear, looking over the crowd. Nothing said “police” on him anywhere. Here's our vibe check: - Beats GPT-5.5 on Senior Engineer bench. On our toughest benchmark Opus 4.8 scores a 63—a hair higher than GPT-5.5's score of 62, and a full 30 points higher than Opus 4.7. It tackled a ground-up rewrite of a production codebase, and actually built something that works. HOWEVER: Coding performance varied a lot at different reasoning levels. We recommend using it on xhigh for best results. - Incredibly good writer. Opus 4.8 scored a 79.6 on our writing benchmark—measuring models on real-world writing tasks we do all of the time like essay writing, promo email writing, and more. It beats GPT-5.5 by 6 points. It produces well-written prose with fewer "AI-isms". It's also very good at writing in your voice given the right context. HOWEVER: Writing performance also varied with reasoning levels. Elon told us, the world can only supply a tiny fraction of the chips his companies will need. So this is the solution. Everyone's sleeping on image-to-3D AI models. They can make... your app look incredibly unique, with just a little effort. Here's how. This is my calorie tracker, built in a week with nothing but prompting. Just Claude Code + a couple APIs. The visuals are all AI-generated. I'll be sharing the full workflow + all the crazy technical stuff Claude and I did to make this work, so nobody has to struggle through it like me. Deep dive coming soon! Till then, this is the high-level idea: 1. Get a clean image of the food (or whatever your asset is) - In my app, the user describes foods via text, or attaches images (or both) - If text, an LLM extracts the food description and formats it into a specific prompt I tuned for this design, and we generate an image using Z-Image Turbo through fal - If image, we do the same thing but with FLUX.2 [dev] to edit the user image into our reference design - Originally, both used Google Nano Banana, but switching to open models cut costs and latency a ton 2. Gaussian splatting (2D image → 3D model) - I tried various 2D-to-3D options on fal and ended up with TripoSplat as my preferred balance of speed, cost, latency; this turns an image into a 3D model that looks super high quality (link below) - The app displays the 2D image while our backend generates the 3D splat - We "groom" the splat to reduce size and load time by culling low-opacity/scale points 3. Render efficiently on device Originally, it looked great but ran at 10 FPS. Getting to 120 FPS was a crazy journey. TL;DR: - SwiftUI had to go; it forced us to render each asset in independent MTKViews, which wasn't workable - Instead, we composite every dish into one full-bleed CAMetalLayer using MetalSplatter (link below) - We had to make some optimizations within MetalSplatter's code too, to reduce the overhead of sorting points per render Then I added some finishing touches like the subtle rotation and parallax as they move around. I think it turned out pretty cool :) Overall, this took some effort, but we still got it done in less than a day. Hopefully your agent can follow in the footsteps of mine and do it much faster. I learned this the hard way: do NOT use... SwiftUI if you want your app to look and feel amazing. At least when coding with AI. (sorry, Apple colleagues reading this 😅) I'm sharing my process vibe coding this calorie tracker. I get a lot of questions about the fluid transition in the video. Here's the whole story. Initially, Claude built the grid with SwiftUI. It was quick and easy, and looked good! But the transition to the day view was a boring navigation push/pop. No fun. I wanted something custom. I asked Claude to make it a fluid transition that remaps the food tiles from their source to destination positions. All hell broke loose. Claude tried a bunch of horrible things. Initially it used matched geometry effects, which worked OK but didn't lend themselves well to gesture-driven animations. So it resorted to SwiftUI preference keys + geometry readers to figure out the source and destination positions and calculate the interpolated position based on gesture progress, coordinating across grid and day views. But this meant it had to write a custom layout because it couldn't reposition tiles inside the native SwiftUI grid. And it had to do an awkward handoff between views, which always created ugly pops or jumps. And don't get me started on trying to put it on a bouncy spring, that only made the math 10x buggier. Fortunately, Claude Fable was smart enough to see that this was becoming a disaster (and discover most of the issues itself, in the simulator), so it pivoted away from SwiftUI. Opus might not be so wise, so you'll have to pay attention and intervene. Ultimately, it rewrote it in plain UIKit and everything turned out great. After that, we moved from 2D images to 3D assets, which introduced a new set of performance challenges and yet another rewrite to a single Metal layer, which is what you see below. I can write more about the 2D-to-3D saga if anyone's interested. If I were to do it again, I'd just say "Don't use SwiftUI" from the very first prompt, and save a few hours of headaches. SwiftUI can be amazing for a human iterating directly in code. But agents don't benefit from any of its advantages. Plus, agents have seen decades of UIKit training data, so they're great at writing it, and it's far more flexible. Here's hoping we see more agent-friendly iterations of SwiftUI in the future. Can't help but smile at this one. One of... those stories I think we are going to look back and laugh at one day. ⬇️ James Voorhies was an uncommitted catcher (and a very good one) just over a year ago. Hadn't thrown a varsity inning on the mound. In October going into his senior year I played catch with him at the local elementary school. We threw on a crabgrass field and I told him after 15 minutes of playing catch that his arm, body type, and feel for the baseball were far too advanced for him to not be on the mound. James agreed to start throwing bullpens and "give it a shot". 3 weeks later I did a workout with some of our clients and James threw a bullpen on the game mound. He was 85-87 and absolutely pounded the zone. Threw 3 of the dirtiest changeups I’ve seen (we had played with a kick-change grip a few weeks prior). I had never seen him throw against hitters. Saw a 15 minute catch play session and his first bullpen in years. I Immediately sent the video to a handful of Division 1 programs that were on his list and gave them the scoop. “He's got zero track record but everything about him looks like a future pro arm”. Responses ranged anywhere from excitement to skepticism, which was 100% to be expected. Fast forward a few months to February... CSUN pulled the trigger before his high school season even started and James went on to post a 1.09 ERA, 83 IP, 60 H, 21 BB, and 83 K in his first year of pitching to help take College Park HS to the NCS championship. So here we are essentially 1 year after Jimmy started pitching full time and he’s up to 94 mph as a true freshman, with a win and a save in his first two collegiate appearances with 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 13 K. Pretty cool story of a guy going “all in” on something new and different, and a college program taking a chance on a guy that they see future potential in. But the best part of this story and biggest point I want to make is that I firmly believe the reason Jimmy V was the guy that CSUN took a shot on was because of his makeup, work ethic, character, and competitiveness. Jimmy is one of the best “makeup” guys I’ve ever recruited or advised. He is the perfect combination of humble and confident and was the QB/captain of his football team in high school. Jimmy made it easy for CSUN to say “that’s the guy we want to take a chance on.” And yes, it helped that he was 6’4” and a big time multi-sport athlete with a ton of upside. Saturday, reported released a manifesto to his close family members only minutes before the shooting took place. The dinner, an annual event with President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other Trump administration officials in attendance, was cancelled and its attendees evacuated after gun shots rang out late Saturday night. On Sunday, the New York Post obtained and published what they report to be Allen’s full, 1,052-word manifesto in which he refers to himself as “Cole ‘coldForce’ ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ Allen.” Among the many chilling details laid out in the manifesto, included in full below, are the following: Allen maintained he was “no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor”(referencing left-wing conspiracies related to President Trump) to commit crimes. He planned to target numerous Trump administration officials “prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest.” Allen was willing to “go through most everyone” in attendance at the event “if it were absolutely necessary,” rationalizing the violence because all those present “[chose] to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist, and traitor and are thus complicit.” Various talking points and accusations levied against President Trump in the note appear to come directly from various misleading left-wing conspiracies and talking points spread by Democratic Party members and other U.S. leftists. If you’re going to sound like an idiot, lean into it - you want people to bust your balls. Learn to joke and make people laugh (learning swear words and local idioms is a great way to do this) 3. Make it clear you want and welcome correction. Make it safe for people to make fun of you, repeatedly ask for feedback (“soy gringo menso, ayúdame por favor 🙏🏻”) 4. Did Fortnite REVEAL a HUGE Retcon⁉️ When rewatching the... official Fortnite Story Recap, something strange appears. The Loop Bubble is shown popping from Fracture and transitioning DIRECTLY into the result of the Big Bang, with this sentence being spoken as it happens: - "The Conflict ended with the Zero Point shattered and strewn across all realities" 💥 This line comes directly after Jones' explains the IO vs Seven War, which took place throughout Chapter 2 & 3, with Fracture finishing off the storyline. This "conflict" did NOT continue into Chapter 4...and not a single line was spoken about the events that took place in that chapter, or Jones' time travel leading to the Big Bang. While Chapter 5 wasn't shown either, the difference is there really isnt anything on a big enough scale that happened that chapter except for Hope's introduction that would need to be shown to us for the overall storyline to make sense...but Jones' being the cause of the Big Bang was a pivotal plot point. This begs a seriously huge question -- Did Fortnite retcon Chapter 4? 💭 I know this is automatically going to be a scary topic for people, but I think this is VERY important to discuss since this is the FIRST EVER official Storyline Recap we've received from Fortnite, and they specifically didn't acknowledge how the Zero Point ACTUALLY shattered - Jones traveling back in time. We all know Chapter 4 was all over the place with unfinished plots, and also didn't arrive to us as intended due to developmental issues at Epic during this time. If we take a second to even entertain the idea that Chapter 4 "didnt happen"...it could actually work nicely. 💡 The Herald and The Last Reality succeed in their plan of destroying the Zero Point -- they shatter it in Fracture. This causes a HUGE Big Bang to occur, reorganizing everything and sending Shards of the Zero Point across all realities. Jones arrives to Hope's Home Reality after Fracture, and the Shard Storyline begins from there. ☄️ This takes out a huge unnecessary gap of time, when really nothing much happened. The Shapeless Man storyline was abandoned (for now), MEGA didn't do anything but lead to Wilds, which reintroduced Slone (we'll get to this in a second), and Last Resort was entirely themed after getting the Time Machine for the Big Bang, with Kado Thorne dying the same season. I ALSO would like to mention that Jones was quite literally absent the ENTIRE Chapter except for the end...our main character of the storyline. As you can see, nothing of importance to the overall plot of the Storyline ever occured this Chapter except for the dead-beginning, except for Dr Slone appearing later on, which could now easily be revisited in MUCH better ways...🌌 If Chapter 4 is retconned, how could the Shapeless man & Doctor Slone be used again? It's simple. For Doctor Slone, we have no idea where she's even been since Big Bang. She appeared briefly, helped the Island escape a full-reality collapse, and then has been MIA since Big Bang. They can return Slone however they'd like, because it really doesn't make much of a difference between us having last seen her in Collision, or in Last Resort. Her interactions with Jones in OG are the only important pieces, which I feel like they could still never reference given the interesting relationship those 2 characters have anyway. Perhaps all of these years without the Imagined Order has unclouded Slone's judgement, so she acts friendlier to Jones when they reunite again, just as they did in the original OG. 🤝 As for the Shapeless Man, he was introduced & teased by Rift Warden Stellan, but never actually arrived in-game, or was referenced...ever again. If (or when) the Shapeless Man does appear again, Epic could really do whatever they want given how little we know about this character in the first place. If it's Geno, it's truly as simple as just reestablishing Geno back into the Storyline in modern day. The Shapeless Man doesn't need to ever be referenced again, because we can assume it would've just been him working in the shadows anyway if thats what they intended. 🏰 I know this is very out of nowhere, but the order of events they described in the OFFICIAL Story Recap felt very intentional, so I wanted to touch on this idea that they perhaps decided Chapter 4 is better off retconned. ALL of the characters introduced this chapter would still exist, including the Triarchy, the Ancients, etc, because they all exist out there in the Omniverse. The "retcon" would purely be that the Island never occured -- Fracture shattered the Zero Point and restarted the Omnniverse, all to The Last Reality's plan. 🛸 Things that would no longer have happened: - Zero Fusion + Paradigm's "Sacrifice" - AMIE leaving in the Rift gate, lines about the Seven being "Sculpted Anew" (lines up with The Order's sudden appearance, and the way she talks about the Seven) - Slone's Return in Wilds - Kado Thorne's death - Jones travelling back in time - Big Bang caused by Jones Things that WOULD still have happened: - Events of early Oathbound + Stellan's hauntings, just in their home reality - Some of the Seven being in possession of TLR, since this happened in Fracture - Triarchy and other characters still exist, just weren't dragged into Asteria - Unseen + Nox invading MEGA City and wiping TLR database, just in their home reality instead - *Possibly* Slone's character arc, just off-screen wherever they want her to have been - Kado Thorne's Time Machine + messing with the past Let me know your thoughts (respectfully, please! You are looking at connected parts of this network of symbols and at the speed at which one image hands you off to the next.
