#Pune: Private Builder Caught Dumping Untreated Sewage into #RamRiver... Since 2021, Environmentalists Demand Immediate Action ..... . . In a shocking revelation, it has been discovered that a private builder, a prominent real estate developer in Pune, has been clandestinely dumping untreated sewage into the Ram River since 2021. The magnitude of this environmental transgression has reached alarming proportions, with over 10 million litres of sewage having been recklessly discharged into the river. The modus operandi involves Rohan Madhuban, a high-end society in Bavdhan Khurd with over 330 flats and nearly 1000 residents. Despite the absence of a functional Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) within the society premises for several years, the builder has persistently managed the sewage treatment process. However, driven by cost-cutting motives, the builder opted to collect the wastewater in tankers, bypassing any treatment, and directly releasing it into the Ram River and other public areas in Bavdhan. The distressing aspect is that the unsuspecting residents of Rohan Madhuban are unwittingly complicit in this environmental crime, contributing to the significant pollution of the river. This egregious act has prompted swift action from concerned parties, with Krunnal Gharre, representing the Aam Aadmi Party, and environmentalists lodging formal complaints with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).......... Illegal sewage outfalls are a major issue on the... River Roding, as they are around much of the country. The EA has not brought any prosecutions for illegal sewage discharges on the Roding this century. In 2022, I discovered an illegal sewage outfall on the Aldersbrook discharging raw shit into the river. I reported it to the EA, who did absolutely nothing. I then had to campaign in my spare time for 3 years to get the outfall fixed, attending meetings with the council & Thames Water & dealing with journalists. Eventually, the campaign worked & Thames Water spent £1 million fixing the outfall. Subsequently, I realised that the EA had no idea where all the illegal sewage outfalls on the river were, or which were most harmful. I therefore went out on the river myself with a bucket, in a pair of waders to find & analyse all the illegal outfalls on the river. I found dozens of them, spilling over a billion litres of raw sewage illegally into the river every year. I have given the exact locations of all the illegal outfalls to the EA & they’ve done sweet FA. Raw sewage continues to pour into the river illegally & unchecked every minute of every day of the year, & parts of the river are now ecologically dead, as well as having e-coli levels more than 250 times the safe limit.show more

While I was striking in Windermere yesterday, demanding an... end to sewage pollution, guess what was happening in Ambleside? Ambleside wastewater treatment works was discharging untreated sewage into the River Rothay. This goes into Englands largest lake which sits within a national park and UNESCO world heritage site. This cloudy concoction is full of everything from bacteria, viruses, parasites, to phosphorus. The water industry insists this is 95% freshwater, which, as you can see, is clearly not true. How much was released from this spill? We don’t know, as United Utilities does not collect volumetric data. We need an end to all treated and untreated sewage discharged into Windermere. The Environment Agency crisis comms swings into action ahead... of the first episode of ‘Dirty Business’ tonight with the usual mix of gaslighting, cover up and half truths. They say they “act on breaches of environmental law”, but on my river, the Roding, there are dozens of illegal outfalls, spewing over a billion litres of raw sewage into the river every year and the Environment Agency has not brought a single prosecution this century. Not one! The evidence is not hard to find- many of these outfalls have been reported by the public for decades and run through parks & major population centres. There seems to be actual policy in place to just ignore rampant criminality, although we cannot say if this policy springs from inertia, incompetence, corruption or a mixture of all three. So that the EA cannot say I’m making this up, I’m going to post pictures, locations and data measurements from illegal outfalls on the Roding. First up is the Cran Brook. Running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at least 25 litres a second and ammonia concentrations of 5-7 PPM, this river is arguably the most polluted river in London, spewing 750 million litres of sewage & landfill leachate directly into the Roding, here:show more

If you’re eating your breakfast, look away This site... has been a major focus of our campaign to end sewage pollution in Windermere. Because of our sustained pressure: - The EA is reviewing a permit that has remained unchanged since 1989 - Tankering at the site has increased by 171% - The EA is now attending regularly to check compliance, after almost a decade of absence - The water company is now investing to improve discharge standards, after we highlighted that the treatment process was identical to what was in place in 1978 But this still does not protect England’s largest lake. The only way to save Windermere is to stop the sewage once and for all. Final video filmed on 15 February 2023.show more

#Pune: Kalpataru Exquisite Society Residents In Wakad Without Water... Supply For Over 48 Hours; Lifts Not Functional Too Reported by Varad Bhatkhande Pune, 27th July 2024: The severe rainfall on 24th and 25th July caused widespread disruption in Pune and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area. Both cities faced severe flooding due to inadequate drainage systems, elevated water discharge from the dams, and rising water levels in the Mutha, Mula, and Pavana Rivers. Low-lying areas were particularly affected, with many residential societies reporting severe waterlogging in their underground basements. Residents of the Kalpataru Exquisite Society in Kaspate Wasti, Wakad, are still grappling with the flood situation two days after the rain. Frustration is growing as the newly built society faces issues such as a lack of parking, electricity, and operational lifts, along with an increase in mosquitoes. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of drinking water, functional toilets, and operational lifts. With basements filled with knee-deep water, daily tasks are becoming increasingly difficult, especially for senior citizens and those with medical emergencies, as access to higher floors is challenging. Dattatraya Deshmukh, President of the Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation, told Punekar News, "There are drainage problems. Other societies in our area, particularly those close to the Mula River in Wakad, have faced similar issues. However, the problems in those societies were resolved the same day or the next, but this particular society's issues persist." Chandrakant Indalkar, Additional Commissioner of PCMC and head of the Disaster Management Department told Punekar News, "The ward officials have been informed about the situation. The problem has been exacerbated due to the society's proximity to the river. We are currently taking all necessary measures to address this issue." Abhishek Gupta, a resident of Sierra Tower in Kalpataru Exquisite Society, said, "For the past two days, there has been no water in our society. The lifts were closed, but now a lift has temporarily started operating. However, the situation remains dire. Water was removed earlier using pipes, which has been a great relief for me and the more than 1,000 residents living here." In response to the situation, Rahul Kalate, former corporator of the area, has pledged to offer all possible support to the residents.show more

The Aam Aadmi Party had claimed that justice in... the sacrilege cases would be delivered within 24 hours of forming the government. However, instead of ensuring exemplary punishment in the 2015 incidents, a draft of a new law was introduced and sent to a Select Committee, and the matter was effectively pushed into cold storage. A government that has failed to advance the process of justice for four years is today using police force against Sikh congregations who are demanding justice. Since 2015, Sikh sentiments have been deeply hurt, yet accountability has not been clearly established. In view of the demand being raised in Samana, the Bhagwant Mann government should include justice in the sacrilege cases and concrete legal steps in the agenda of the Legislative Assembly session beginning on March 6. Instead of forcibly dispersing the congregations’ protest with police action, the government should prioritize the sacrilege cases and respect the sentiments of the Sikh community.show more

This video reveals what appears to be sewage flowing... into water on Southend seafront. The footage was captured on Sunday. The area of darker coloured water was spotted by a man in an aircraft who labelled it “disgraceful”. Mark Hutley said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It could be seen for miles.” It was spotted between Chalkwell beach and Westcliff beach. The apparent sewage spill is close to one of Anglian Water’s ‘storm overflow’ pipes that leads into the water from the land. Latest records indicate that it was active on Sunday 8 September and emptying into the area of the Thames Estuary for a period of time. Anglian Water have a permit from the Environment Agency to operate the storm overflow pipe, which specifies conditions for controlled sewage and stormwater spills during heavy rainfall. This is in order to prevent flooding in homes and businesses when the sewer network becomes overloaded with rainwater.show more
