A wife’s phone call helped Telangana Police crack the... Madras Regiment arms theft case in Bolarum. Upputholla Mallesh, 37, a retired Havildar of the 20 Battalion Madras Regiment, allegedly stole weapons from the regiment’s Kote and magazine rooms on the night of August 30-31. Mallesh, who joined the Army in 2010, retired on June 30 after 16 years of service. Police say he was upset over his early retirement. The stolen cache included four AK-203 rifles with five magazines each, one INSAS rifle with three magazines, six 9 mm automatic pistols with 12 magazines each, one civilian 6.35 bore pistol, and a passive night-vision binocular. He also allegedly stole 1,156 rounds of 9 mm pistol ammunition, 720 AK-203 rounds, besides 11 INSAS ball rounds, five tracer rounds and 20 blank rounds, taking the total to nearly 1,900 rounds. Mallesh was summoned for questioning but did not appear. Police then explained the seriousness of the case to his wife and father-in-law. While on her way to the police station, his wife called him and questioned him. He told her about the arms. She informed her father, who alerted the police. Bolarum Police, Hyderabad Task Force, Malkajgiri SOT and Telangana State Intelligence tracked him down. The weapons were recovered from locations in Kowkoor, Yapral and Achampet in Nagarkurnool district. Mallesh has been arrested and remanded.show more

After seeing posts online of people searching for him, he kept moving from place to place to avoid being caught. He was eventually caught on February 12 this year, but by then he had already sold everything in the bag for 200k and couldn’t trace the buyers, claiming they were Ikeja boys by the roadside.
