Played Brown Deer in Coralville, Iowa with my son... after showing him where his classes will be in the Fall Semester. I beat him handedly because I tried to weaken his insanely strong grip (which threw off his whole game). With a neutral grip and a little practice he would be a low handicap or scratch. He just took 8 years off to play lacrosse. When he controls his spin he hits the ball well over 300 yards and his wedge game is dangerous. Both my kids have better swings than dad.show more

Even though when he came to me his speech was a bit slurred, when we started the Health talk. He listened with Apt attention. He became active. When it got to the health question part. He raised up his hands and answered some questions I was impressed. He came close to me, told him his struggles and battle and how he wants to change. I even learnt about more drugs from him. One shocking thing he did that touched me, he said he wanted me to do a video and live tiktok with him because he wanted to spread message to his followers to stop doing drugs. Right there on tiktok live, Ika Muji and myself were talking. He was telling his followers the dangers of drugs and substances. Today, I received a call I will not forget.... I had just woken up after studying through the night. As I prepared to pray, my phone kept ringing. I ignored it at first, but it persisted. When I finally answered, the voice on the other end said: “Pastor… my brother has died.” Silence filled my chest. He had been sick. Sleeping outside in the cold after the rains. Trying to survive in a city that is becoming increasingly unforgiving. His sister visited him with some food. He seemed better afterwards. But then, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. His sister was far away working. Pain does strange things to people. Sometimes it hardens the very heart that needs help the most. By the time his sister returned… he was already fading. And shortly after, he was gone. What broke me even more was this: She said she didn’t call earlier because she knew things have been tight, and I hadn’t been able to meet many of their needs recently. That sentence pierced deeply. This was a man who struggled—yes. He battled alcoholism. He fell, rose, and fell again. But he also believed. Just last Sunday, after a long absence, he came back to church. He said his spirit was restless until he returned. He worshipped. He served. That was the last time. I wasn’t there that day. And now, he lies in a morgue—another quiet casualty of hardship, addiction, and a city that demands more than many can give. But here is what I hold onto: God is not absent in broken stories. The same grace that meets us in our strength also meets us in our weakness. The One who began a work is not blind to the battles fought in secret. We must do better—for one another. We must see more, reach more, love more. Because sometimes, what looks like “irresponsibility” is actually exhaustion. What looks like “resistance” is actually pain.
