An Oldie but a Goldie. Approach ➜ Power V... One of the biggest keys to a consistent swing is what happens from approach to Power V. As the knob turns toward the pitcher and into the path of the pitch, the barrel naturally falls behind your hands. We don’t need to flick it back to have it fall behind..DUH From there, don’t throw the barrel at the ball. Release it in the most direct line along the path of the pitch. Some pitches require a slightly steeper path. Others require a flatter one. But the goal stays the same: ✔️ Keep the barrel below your hands through extension. Approach = The barrel works to the side of the shoulder as the body turns toward the pitcher. Power V = The release of the lag and extension of the barrel through the baseball. Master that section of the swing, and you’ll give yourself a much better chance to create consistent contact, adjust to different pitch planes, and produce real power. To Rotate or To Tilt 📝 📝 Rotating around... a spinal axis can feel very powerful. BUT it’s sluggish. The barrel doesn’t get up to speed until late. ❌ Tilt provides the direction and quickness early which leads to consistent power numbers. ✅ At Launch, you can see Judge’s head like a statue while the torso works more North/South (tilt) Why isn’t it Rotation? Barrel Path 👀 Rear Leg 👀 ✅ Watch the barrel path. It works like a clock. Starts at 12 and works down the back. Then contact at 6 o’clock and Out from. ✅ Watch the rear leg Pivot and provide the shift AT launch. ❌ Rotation creates a drag, then speed around and out front. Limits direction. A lot of people are misreading Shohei’s grand slam... swing. They misread because they don’t know high level. One guy said “front leg, off balance out front”. Don’t let the video interfere with your opinion. 🤦‍♂️ His weight is clearly back at launch. He has very good barrel depth (means he wasn’t on his front leg at launch). You can’t get barrel depth when on a weighted front leg. He’s clearly early. So the launch was deep (rear legged) but the pitch wasn’t there yet. So he demonstrates an adjustability that only comes with HLP…..he LET the arms out to align barrel and ball. Key word: LET His barrel was already up to speed from being launched rearward. You can see it’s completely blurred out when it’s still behind him. But because his arms are not force producers, they are free and able to ‘let out’ the barrel. (He could have pulled them in if the pitch was inside) If the arms were force producers the launch would have been forward, not rearward. There would be no deep rearward barrel blur. And the arms would have been ‘spent’ at launch. They’d have no ability to do anything else. He would have made a commitment at launch to a spot, he would have ‘spent’ the arms to produce force, and that would not allow him the late arm adjustability that he shows here.
