🇺🇸🇰🇷 The US has officially created and deployed the... first permanent MQ-9 Reaper strike-reconnaissance UAV unit in South Korea, the 431st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron, based at Kunsan Air Base. Interestingly, this is effectively the first revival of this unit since World War II, when it previously consisted of interceptors escorting strategic bombers during air raids on Japan. The squadron is subordinate to the 8th Fighter Wing, where F-16s are already based, and will become a key element for continuous monitoring of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. The MQ-9 can stay airborne for more than 24 hours, is equipped with an electro-optical/infrared system and an AN\/APY-8 Lynx radar, and can also carry reconnaissance pods and a payload of guided weapons. The deployment of the Reaper compensates for the withdrawal of manned RC-12 Guardrail reconnaissance aircraft and strengthens the intelligence system in the region, where both larger American reconnaissance aircraft and their South Korean counterparts are already actively operating. Born on the hotel campus to her mother Chumki, Thumki chose to stay back while her sister found a new home. Today, she’s an integral part of the Taj Bengal family. Every morning at 4:30 am, Thumki takes her ‘perimeter rounds,’ inspecting the grounds, chasing birds, and doing her part to keep the campus lively. By the time guests start their day, she retreats to her cozy shelter near the parking lot, always respectful of her human visitors. Thanks to the compassion of Senior Vice President Operations K. Mohanchandran and his wife Seema, an animal rescuer, Thumki and other campus dogs now have safe shelters, vaccinations, and ongoing care.
