WHY WILL CASTE THRIVE IN INDIA? Because a chief... minister in his public address brazenly speaks about caste! Telangana CM Revanth Reddy takes a dig at BRS party leadership. He was visibly riled up because BRS Supremo and former CM of Telangana KCR is considered “Bapu” or “Father of Telangana”. Revanth, relying on word-play, changes it into a caste-based narrative. Both KCR and Revanth are from upper caste. While KCR never mentioned about castes, Revanth harps on caste. Once he said only Reddys can rule or Kammas are smart. May be he is the only chief minister in Telugu states (in my memory) who attends caste meetings and openly makes casteist remarks. Also! For all the propaganda about Caste Census and BC Reservations- on ground implementation is next to zero. But man never rests a minute when he has to speak about caste! When a man of CM’s stature normalises speaking about caste, there is little hope in India to become caste-free in a few billion years also! In his resignation speech this morning, Sir Keir Starmer... said: “Six years ago I inherited a party that was...morally bankrupt.” He elaborated, declaring: “We changed our Party, ripping out the poison of antisemitism.” The reality is that Sir Keir’s record on antisemitism is a very mixed bag. He sat in the antisemite Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet for years and backed him to become Prime Minister. Only later, following electoral defeat and then the EHRC report, which followed our referral, did he decide that the Party had become “morally bankrupt” and needed antisemitism torn out “by its roots”. To his credit, he then did change the Party in relation to antisemitism from what it was under Mr Corbyn, who, to underscore the scale of the change, is no longer even a member. Still, the Party has more to do – year on year in our polling of British Jews it is viewed as more tolerant of antisemitism among its officeholders than any other. The remedial job is not over. But Sir Keir deserves gratitude for starting that process. Addressing antisemitism in a political party is one thing. Confronting it in society is another, and far more urgent. On that score, Sir Keir, like his predecessor, has been a failure. Antisemitism in Britain has surged to levels unknown in living memory. That has taken place under the watch of this Government and the last one, across two parties, with no end in sight. Not only has far too little been done, even after repeated promises, but Sir Keir’s Government has even taken measures that have made matters worse, with some foreign policy declarations pouring fuel on the fire. As the country looks forward, addressing this shocking extremism in our society must be a top priority for Sir Keir’s successor. EPS has become the embodiment of the saying: “Thaanum... padukka maattaar, thalliyum padukka maattaar!” When EPS allotted losing seats to the BJP in an attempt to finish the party for good in Tamil Nadu, he believed he could form an ADMK government with a simple majority and permanently marginalize the BJP as a political force. It backfired spectacularly! Today, he is not even the Leader of the Opposition. After doing virtually nothing for 4½ years as the principal Opposition Leader, he tried to project himself as the primary anti-DMK force and expected people to vote for him purely based on the traditional DMK–ADMK five-year cycle. That backfired too. Vijay emerged as the fulcrum of the anti-DMK movement. After his disastrous defeat, instead of acting like a statesman by supporting Vijay, forming a coalition government, and becoming Deputy Chief Minister, EPS allegedly tried to crawl back to the CM’s chair through backdoor negotiations with the DMK. That too backfired. Nobody trusted him. When his CM ambitions collapsed, he reportedly tried to stop his own MLAs from supporting Vijay during the floor test. That backfired as well. His own MLAs have now abandoned him for good. Yet, EPS still does not seem to realise that he has lost his relevance in Tamil Nadu politics. Perhaps it is a toxic combination of ego, insecurity, and an inability to understand the seismic shift taking place in modern politics and the expectations of Gen Z voters.
