hello everyone! 🤍 as you already know, i am... a wheelchair user that has to use a wheelchair most of the time because im a fall risk & in chronic pain unfortunately, the Medline one i was gifted is extremely heavy and since im weak, i cannot push myself around in it. my bf has to do all the heavy lifting and pushing, which takes away from the independence i want as an adult. so, i am officially starting a "fundraiser" towards a custom wheelchair that my insurance refuses to pay for because i am "not disabled enough". achieving this would help me a TON. i want to be able to push myself around freely and be able to get to places on my own without relying on other people. sometimes i cant even use the wheelchair because its too heavy for my mom (caregiver) to get in and out of the car and i risk hurting myself by walking. i have tried three times with my insurance to have them cover it but unfortunately thats how the US rolls and i gotta find other solutions! [Discrete Fourier Transform] by Hand ✍️ In signal processing,... the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is no doubt the most important method. But the math involved is extremely complex, literally, involving a summation over a complex number term e^(-iwt). I developed this exercise to demonstrate that underneath such complexity, DFT is just a series of matrix multiplications you can calculate by hand. ✍️ Once you see that, it should not surprise you that a deep neural network, which is also a series of matrix multiplications, with activation functions in-between, can learn to perform DFT to process and analyze signals so effectively. How does DFT work? [1] Given ↳ Signals A, B, and C in the 🟧 frequency domain: ◦ A = cos(w) + 2cos(2w) ◦ B = cos(w) + cos(3w) + cos(4w) ◦ C = -cos(2w) + cos(3w) ◦ Each signal is a weighed sum of four cosine waves at frequencies 1w, 2w, 3w, and 4w. ◦ We will apply Inverse DFT to convert the signals to time domain representations, and then demonstrate DFT can convert back to their original frequency domain representations. ↳ Signal X in the 🟩 time domain. Baby talk vs “parentese” - what’s the difference? Often... in my replies I see parents explaining why - as a method of promoting language acquisition - they never use “baby talk.” I generally agree with this sentiment, but there are some important distinctions to be made here. If by “baby talk” you mean using cutesy nonsense words (like wa-wa for water or ba-ba for bottle) you’re on the right track. There’s no need for you to make up incorrect or overly simplified vocabulary on your child’s behalf. Use real words, even if your child isn’t quite ready to do so themself. It’s how they learn. But sometimes I see confusion between “baby talk” and what is known as “motherese” or “parentese” - which isn’t nonsensical, but simply slower and more varied in intonation. (Think of Ms. Rachel’s sing-songy voice.) And this isn’t something you need to shy away from at all. In fact, research suggests that parentese - with its prolonged vowel sounds and expressive facial expressions - can be a social hook that attracts children’s attention, encouraging them to attune not only to the language to which they are being exposed but how it is produced. Importantly, it’s complete and grammatically correct… just a little more performative than you might use elsewhere. This lovely video, shared to IG by tommypadula, is a nice example. Every time I take an action I hear the potential criticism in my head… but I do it anyway. The criticism does always come. I get criticism on my body too. I can love myself at any size, but the never ending pressure to please everyone and to try to be so strong people can’t criticize me is tiring. Sometimes I wonder if my problems are really my own. When I’m alone, I only have love for myself without an ounce of shame or self-hatred. I like myself and who I see in the mirror. But hate and criticism can eat away at you. “Are they right?” “Should I really be eating that?” “People will judge me.” I’ve never recognized a negative voice in my mind as mine. I can’t think of one person who would say I’m the negative voice in their head either. But the negative voice in my head has left me suicidal before. I don’t hate myself. But sometimes people treat me like they hate me. It’s hard not to internalize it. Today, I want to remind you- you don’t have to hate yourself even when the world treats you like they hate you. It’s safe to make mistakes. It’s safe to love yourself and your body even when others laugh at you. Every time I get a message about how someone loves their body a little more after reading my messages, it reminds me why I keep opening my heart. It’s hope. We all need hope. 10 things I can’t quit thinking about after ETHDenver:... 1. Convergence = here. Devner didn’t feel like an ETH conference, but more like an AI + crypto + TradFi + techno-philosophical conference. The convergence is true and real and accelerating. 2. Most corporate jobs suck ass. 40 years at a desk working on the same thing? Pure dystopia. We need fluid movement between passions, projects, people. DAOs are a massive step in that direction, but now AI is giving individuals the means to spin up their own massive businesses… there’s also this notion floating around that we can launch a product or contribute to a protocol or a DAO in a way that sets us up for life rather than slaving for decades at the golden teat of a paycheck. It's a massive win for human flourishing, passion and excitement. 3. oRaNgE cOIn. Bitcoin came up far more than I thought it would. Even $ETH ICO buyers/gigawhales talked about how bullish they are on it. The question is no longer whether $BTC will survive but rather how much exposure you should have. Orange coin has truly “up-leveled” or “transcended” to become something people simply can't ignore. 4. Founder quote that hit me like a truck: "We overengineered our project and under-engineered our story." In a world where AI flattens the app creation process, only your mindshare matters.
