What’s driving the upcoming record breaking cold snap?? It’s... widespread warmth (up-to 30F above normal) and intense blocking in the Arctic/ Greenland/N Canada. That is squeezing out the (tropospheric) Cold Polar Vortex and forcing it south deep into the US. While it may be tempting to blame Global warming-low Arctic sea ice-& Arctic amplification for this, the climate change component is likely enhancing, but is not the primary driver. Teleconnections to various natural oscillations (and the stratosphere) working in tandem are often the culprit in these high latitude blocks. Climate change simply piggy backs and makes the blocking - and amp’d pattern - more extreme. (But it does NOT make the cold air, colder which is a common misconception)show more

As we enter July, models anticipate the Atlantic to... remain generally quiet hurricane-wise. El Niño is dominating the current and forecast conditions in the tropical Atlantic, manifesting as high shear in the Caribbean and less thunderstorm activity than normal. By contrast, the eastern Pacific is expected to spring to life, supported by the El Niño background state. Watch the continuous cyclone activity (orange blobs) in this 35-day GEFS forecast, versus the rather docile Atlantic. We can't guarantee no Atlantic storms in July, especially with the always-present risk of so-called "home grown" development along old cold fronts that drape across the SW Atlantic and Gulf region. But things seem likely to stay in check for a while.show more

Powering our very unusual pattern - with early season... Gulf cold fronts and strong wind shear - is an extremely amplified jet stream for September. It has thrown the whole Northern Hemisphere weather off-kilter. That means cool-dry weather this weekend for North-Central Florida about a month early! It also means hurricane killing wind shear across the Atlantic Basin! Here's the science: Warm air is being forced all the way up to the Arctic circle by an elongated jet stream. That will cause an "Omega block" to form this weekend over Central Canada - you can see the Greek Omega shape with cold air on either side. These "blocking" patterns are very tough to dislodge. A strong Pacific Jet will blast mild air across... the nation over the next week. Temps will once again jump to 30°+F above normal - a “blowtorch” pattern through next weekend. But we are in a very changeable/ transient pattern, with both a strong Pacific jet and also strong high-latitude blocking. The combo of these two players means, strong shifts - a week to week see-saw pattern. Not just changeable, but volatile, herky-jerky weather whiplash. In about 8-10 days cold should return to the Eastern US. The real question is: can it lock in? Or will the pattern stay transient? Probably transient given the active Pacific jet, but we’ll see.show more

SNOW-EFFECT SNOW?!? ❄️ As Arctic air surged south across... deep snow cover in the Central U.S., it was able to pick up moisture, similar in concept (but weaker) to classic lake-effect processes. Once that cold airmass moved over snow-free, relatively warmer ground, low-level instability increased. That promoted rising motion and cloud formation, much like when Arctic air pours off the continent and out over the ocean. 🌨️ The end result: scattered snow showers and flurries showing up on radar across parts of MS, AL, TN, and KY.show more
