Know that I say this with total love: what’s... wrong with planting palm trees and banana trees in NC is that you’re destroying the natural beauty of this state. Palm trees are only native to a very small portion of Brunswick county. Banana trees? They’re not native at all. When I was growing up finding a palm tree? That was like magic. It was an experience that left you breathless. Today, transplants and developers have planted them all over Wilmington. A place they didn’t exist at all 30 years ago. You know what’s been lost as a result? Gorgeous live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and miles of longleaf pine forests. And it’s not just Wilmington that suffers from this invasion. You can find palm trees planted all over the coastal plain - all the way up through Raeford. They’re a hideous and tacky eyesore that destroys what North Carolina is really supposed to look like and it’s a threat to our natural heritage. I drove past this place yesterday, the problem this place has in urine.
