You can oppose hate and still be wary of... who gets to decide what speech is forbidden. Both matter. Artists, journalists, and thinkers have always pushed at the edges. Free expression is how societies evolve, not something to be managed into silence. The moment ‘you’re not allowed to say that’ becomes normalised, power (not truth) begins to define the limits of our expression. It’s often framed as ‘safety’ or ‘protection’, while authority decides what qualifies as ‘hate speech’. Across history, ‘you’re not allowed to say that’ has justified silencing journalists, punishing artists, criminalising protest, and suppressing religious or political minorities. This isn’t about protecting hate. It’s about protecting the ability to question and challenge.
