Lots of calls to the hospital now are from... people who have acidentally disturbed a nest. The most important rule is immediately (and I mean immediately, every second counts so no photo taking!) put everything back as you found it and urgently call a good established rescue for advice. We're coming into the height of baby season now so this is particularly important, and could mean the difference between life and death for the babies. Pregnant hedgehogs build two or three maternity nests, in case the chosen nest becomes uninhabitable (from flooding or predators for example). This means mum can quickly move her babies without having to leave them to find bedding and build. BUT.. Moving babies isn't a cute, Disney-esque event. It's a dire emergency. It's difficult, sometimes painful, and fraught with danger and tragedy. Babies get dropped, the ones left in the new nest may wander out while mum is back getting the next one from the old nest, and mum will be suffering extreme stress. Prevention is always better than cure so please be extra careful in the garden during this baby season. Before doing anything, think hedgehog. Anything left undisturbed for long will be seen as an attractive nesting place: Beneath a shed/wendy house/decking Inside a shed Inside a compost bag/rubbish bag Under piles of rubbish/wooden palettes Under furniture/barbeque covers Taking a moment to gently check before moving could save precious little lives.show more

This woman was catching flack for running down the... highway to stop traffic so this huge herd of geese could cross. She specifically is trying to get that truck to stop who seems intent on inching closer to the geese instead of waiting patiently like the other cars. Many were calling her a Karen. This is a HUGE milestone for the ambitious Saving Wildcats (#SWAforLIFE) project that we've supported for many years. One wildcat born here at the zoo, called Margaret, was relocated to Scotland to help with these conservation efforts and went on to have several kittens of her own. Before telling you about butterflies generally, let me tell... you something spectacular about THIS butterfly. Its name is Alcon blue butterfly. It is one of the most famous examples of an extreme social parasite in the butterfly world. How the deception works: After the female Alcon Blue lays her eggs and they hatch, feeds on the plant for about 2–3 weeks, going through its first three instars (growth stages). When it reaches the fourth instar, the caterpillar drops to the ground and waits. It secretes chemicals (allomones) from a special gland that mimic the exact scent profile of the brood (larvae/pupae) of a myrmica ants. When the worker ants encounter the caterpillar, they'll mistake it for one of their own lost larvae, and carry it back into their underground nest. In some populations, the caterpillar even makes tiny sounds that imitate the “queen ant” calls, which elevates its status inside the colony. Ants will actually prefer feeding the caterpillar over their own larvae! The caterpillar then becomes a ruthless predator and eats hundreds of ant grubs over the next 10–22 months. After almost a year (or even two in some cases), the caterpillar pupates inside the ant nest. The adult butterfly emerges, inflates its wings, and crawls out of the nest (often at dawn when ants are less active). The ants don’t attack it because its scales reduce friction and it may release calming chemicals.show more
