Today was one of the hardest and proudest days... of my life. Tears in my eyes, but pride in my heart. Our son Matthew left today for a six-month deployment with the United States Air Force. His first deployment. I was the exact same age he is now when I went on my first deployment, and today I finally understood what my parents must have felt when they watched me leave. That quiet mix of pride, fear, love, and letting go. It’s bittersweet watching your child grow into a man who is willing to serve something bigger than himself. You raise them, you teach them, you try to prepare them for the world… and one day they put on a uniform and step into it. I am incredibly proud of you, Matthew. My home was a magical place. Only ashes remain.... The outpouring of support from community has been monumental and every message, donation, gesture has truly been food for me these last few days. We’ve got a long road ahead of us. We evacuated with only the clothes on our backs so we truly have nothing left. We are underinsured, it will be a battle. Sobering. Hard. Life-Changing. But… I want everyone to remember its beauty and optimism, the joy the disco cabin brought me and so many others who gathered here. My very first time in London and I thought... I would start day 1 by being a typical tourist. So this is London… but where are all the native English people? Day 1 observations of being a proper tourist - It’s like an international buffet of people.
