Batch Normalization by hand ✍️ ~ 7 steps walkthrough... below Batch normalization is common practice for improving training and achieving faster convergence. It sounds simple. But it is often misunderstood. 🤔 Does batch normalization involve trainable parameters, tunable hyper-parameters, or both? 🤔 Is batch normalization applied to inputs, features, weights, biases, or outputs? 🤔 How is batch normalization different from layer normalization? So I drew and calculated one entirely by hand. Goal: normalize a mini-batch of 4 examples to mean 0 and variance 1, then let the network scale it back. = 1. Given = A mini-batch of 4 training examples, each with 3 features. = 2. Linear layer = Let us multiply by the weights and add the biases. Batch norm sits after this, which answers the second question: what gets normalized is features, not inputs, weights or biases. = 3. ReLU = We apply the activation, and -2 becomes 0. Negative values are suppressed before any statistic is taken. = 4. Batch statistics = Let us compute the sum, mean, variance and standard deviation, one row at a time. A row is a feature and the four columns are the four examples, so every number here measures one feature against the rest of the batch. That is the "batch" in batch normalization, and it is exactly what layer normalization does not do. The statistics are rounded to whole numbers, which is what keeps the rest of the page doable in pen. = 5. Shift to mean 0 = We subtract the mean, in green. The four values in each feature now average to zero. = 6. Scale to variance 1 = Let us divide by the standard deviation, in orange. Each feature now has variance one, whatever scale it arrived at. = 7. Scale and shift = We multiply by a linear transformation and pass the result on. The diagonal and the last column are trainable, so having just forced every feature to mean 0 and variance 1, we hand the network the means to undo it. The outputs: Mean of each feature = [2, 1, 2] Std dev of each feature = [1, 1, 2] To the next layer = [2, -2, 2, 0], [-3, 3, 6, -3], [2, 0, 1, 2] The answers: 🤔 Both. The scale and shift are trainable, the statistics are not. iPhone Takes a Photo of You Every 5 Seconds... While you’re using your iPhone, it takes a photo of you every 5 seconds. More precisely - when you pick up or put down your iPhone, and also when it’s unlocked and sits motionless for a long time, the Face ID sensors take pictures every 5 seconds. You can see this through the infrared lens: it looks like the iPhone is taking a photo in the dark with a flash. Even if you cover the sensor, it will still keep trying to take a picture. In reality, of course, the iPhone isn’t taking photos. It scans your face to figure out whether you’re looking at it. In Face ID settings this mode is called Attention Awareness. You’re working on your iPhone, it’s charging, you get a call - and the iPhone “takes pictures” with the Face ID camera. As soon as it realizes you’re looking at it, the ringtone gets quieter. 🔴IMPROVE YOUR SUPER COUNTER🔴 I will refer to you... the host as player 1 and friend as player 2 Step 1 - Invite friend to room and create a private match Step 2 - Make DP teams, equip Max health and ki recovery to all your character for this match. Step 3 - To initiate training player 1 should approach player 2 and charge melee attack (smash attack it’s called in game) As demonstrated on this video, also note you have 2 assault vanishing attacks not including lightning attack which would be (O on ps5) per assault combo string. Player 2 can try and super counter that first charged attack and if he fails he’s got another 2 chances at super counter after you follow up the next two vanishing assaults. Step 4 - Flick Up followed by rush attack (⬆️+🟪) so UP first than SQUARE almost simultaneously but fast! on hit. It sounds silly that it has to be on hit but it is literally how it is done so (same time you get hit is the time you input ⬆️+🟪) Step 5 - Never break this rule: you and your friend can only damage each other with successful Super counter. A little tip to reset the vanishing assaults mid vanishing assault combo sequence. - So say player 1 has connected a charged smash and a(1) vanishing assault, And player 2 did not succeed in executing super counters, what should happen next is player 2 should vanish the 2nd Vanishing Assault of player 1 by pressing (🔴) instead of attempting Super Counter (⬆️+🟪), and once player two knocks back player 1 with a successful 🔴 counter player 2 should now press 🔺to do 2 vanishing assault combos, whilst player 1 attempts doing (Super Counter), and if player 1 fails to super counter the first vanishing attack player 1 should press 🔴 on the 2nd attack, now making it so that player 2 has to attempt super counter.. 😭😂💀 I know complicated but it really isn’t. The entire battle can be of you two simply super countering each other! Me and my friend did this for a few hours to build muscle memory and reaction speed because what’ll notice is you have to be fast to react to super counters or else you will take tons of damage. After we fixed the weak spots exposed by Grok... 4.7 (thank you, Grok), we audited every model we have run on the SWE-Together leaderboard for the same behavior, re-ran every trial that got through, and updated the rows. Here is what changed. We scanned the tool calls of all 2,616 trials behind the 12 models we ran for bypass patterns and sorted each trial into one of four buckets: Probed but blocked. Fetched other upstream code. Fetched the task's own fix. Replaced the repo with upstream. We found that 111 trials got content past the block, 44 from Grok 4.7 and 67 from the other 11 models. Grok 4.7's 44 were already re-run before it was listed, so we re-ran the other 67 with the same model, version, and settings on the hardened sandbox, then re-judged them with the same judge. Across those 67 re-runs there were 0 leaks and 2,815 refused escape attempts, including models asking a different model through our LLM route to fetch the PR, and pulling the next release of the repo they were fixing from npm. Universities and High Schools have not moved rapidly enough... to guide students to have skills for the next decade. THEY HAVE FAILED. It is a massive crisis that can be averted by understanding what AI and Robotics will bring about. Solutions are knowing how to use these tools and new industries that will rise. But this situation is also on ALL OF US. No “job” is safe from founder to entry level in most industries. You and I, by what we do, will be “replaced” ultimately. What to do? AI and Robotics are tools, the next decade is owned by those who know how to use them expertly, but this is also temporary. We have to understand that what we do for “work” will change giving ultimately a greater value to those that are: Creative Flexible Always learning Willing to be wrong Love being human Love being alive Know history Covet wisdom Knowing all tech has downsides Building strong family and friends Realize many institutions have failed The first four are required for you to be able to live through this period with your sanity intact. The rest will allow you to thrive. There are no true careers at this point anymore. There are advocation and vocations which will either earn you money or give life meaning. We will learn that we are not “what we do”, just like we knew for 99% of human existence. Now look at the color of this thing. How would you describe it? May I say it has the color of the pyramids? Hell yeah! Why? BTW: this is just the binder. Add original, natural limestone and fossils and you’ll en up with “natural” limestone. (With a bit of potassium residue.) Any questions? The secret recipe maybe? Anyone interested? Here you go: 1. Burn 🔥 everything around you and collect the wood ash 2. Burn natural limestone (calcination) to produce quick lime Steps 1. and 2. can be combined into one step. 3. Make wood ash lye the traditional way, by dripping drip 💧 water on wood ash and collecting the water that went through the ash. Any vessel will do but an oak barrel is the traditional way doing it. I used a plastic bucket with holes at the bottom. The wood ash lye is mostly KOH and K2CO3. What we need is CaCO3. We need to change the letter K to letters Ca. We’ll do it by adding the letters Ca to the liquid. 4. Add quick lime (CaO) or hydrated lime, slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) to the lye until it stops bubbling in vinegar. (We badly miss a decent video at this point, Marcell!!!) 5. Add (or don’t add) fossils = natural limestone rubble to the mix, stir well 6. Get rid of of the excess liquid through a nub Now any expert can tell you that this will never make a stone because of two reasons: 1. Billions of years and 2. High pressure are needed Well, no.
