Tariffs are essentially a tax on imported goods, and when these tariffs were applied to Chinese products, the increased costs were often passed on to American consumers in the form of higher prices. China's retaliation led to a sharp decline in demand for American farm products from Chinese buyers, which in turn caused a drop in prices and substantial financial losses for American farmers.
