⚠️ 🇺🇦 UPDATE: The shooting between SBU and GUR... personnel in Kyiv is becoming more complicated. New Ukrainian accounts dispute the impression that the two services were simply conducting a joint operation. The incident centers on Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK). According to the emerging version, GUR personnel went to 10 Yuriya Shumskoho Street intending to detain SBU officers who had allegedly previously taken Kaplunov. SBU personnel then reportedly attempted to detain the GUR team. Gunfire followed. There is important earlier context. On August 27, military lawyer Taras Borovsky publicly reported that his client, a serviceman of Ukraine's military intelligence, had been forcibly abducted in Kyiv. Tonight, as police responded to the Shumskoho address, Borovsky said colleagues of the missing serviceman arrived at the scene. Gunshots were subsequently heard, followed by the arrival of personnel from both GUR and SBU. The SBU is presenting a very different picture. Its version is that, working together with GUR, Ukrainian intelligence disrupted an FSB-planned assassination operation against a Russian opposition figure who had traveled to Ukraine for Independence Day. That figure is reportedly Kaplunov. GUR, meanwhile, has remained silent. So we now have two potentially conflicting layers to this story: An official SBU account describing a successful joint SBU–GUR counterintelligence operation against an FSB assassination plot. And emerging Ukrainian accounts alleging that GUR personnel confronted SBU officers over Kaplunov's detention, producing an armed standoff between the two services. It's 10 hours later and the standoff in Kiev... between SBU (Ukrainian secret police, internal security agency) and GUR (military intelligence/JSOC) is still hot. There have been multiple firefights throughout the night and morning. At least one dead and two injured are being reported -- all GUR. Though there is no official confirmation, it is being widely reported that the background is that the SBU kidnapped Stepan Kalpunov, one of the commanders of the so-called "Russian Volunteer Corps" (a small media/military unit consisting of exiled Russian neo-Nazis), for unknown reasons and GUR attempted to free him (as the RDK is officially a military unit attached to GUR). The SBU tried to downplay the whole thing by issuing a statement claiming that the whole thing is a "joint operation" between SBU and GUR trying to save Kalpunov (only naming him as a "Russian opposition leader") from a Russian assassination attempt. This morning, Ukraine's two most powerful intelligence agencies shot... each other. Yet another battle between the GUR (Main Intelligence Agency) and the SBU (Security Services of Ukraine). The clashes have injured three GUR fighters, possibly killing one. Beyond the blood, there are at least three deeper power struggles. First, the old conflict between the SBU and the GUR. In this case, it’s actually a question of the SBU and the new GUR leadership against the old leader of the GUR, Kirilo Budanov, and the legions of GUR warriors who remain loyal to Budanov. On the side of the SBU, we have its ruthless leader Oleksandr Poklad, also known as ‘the Strangler’. Mapping onto this first conflict is a second one. On the side of the SBU is Zelensky’s power clan, which has long been frustrated with Budanov’s excessive ambitions. The fact that Budanov still wields a private army of prominent, ideologically fanatical GUR warlords displeases the president and his private court. Budanov has also been trying to foil Zelensky’s plan to appoint the ultra-loyal Poklad as de jure head of the SBU. Kaplunov was hence kidnapped with the aim of extracting anti-Budanov testimony. Third and most importantly, revenue. More precisely, competition over control of the highly lucrative scam call centre business, which employs around 60,000 Ukrainians and brings in $1 billion USD a month. The Europeans have been pushing Zelensky to crack down on the industry, which very obviously operates with the sanction of Ukraine’s ‘law enforcement’ agencies, particularly the GUR and SBU. Today’s shootout comes right as Zelensky announced a new law to target the scam call centres. Just in time, because over the past few months, there has been a spate of terrorist attacks and murders around the world, all linked to the GUR and its scam call centres — torture and decapitation in Bali, explosions in Monaco, and worst of all, naive European burghers scammed out of their savings. Constantly linked with this transnational web of violence is the GUR’s bizarre menagerie of fanatical warlords, along with more traditional mafia bosses. In WWII, the West gladly publicized Nazi atrocities against... Jews and is now keeping quiet about similar war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces against Russians. Out of anger at what they had seen in concentration camps and elsewhere, Allied soldiers forced German civilians to watch footage from camps, rebury victims, or confront other evidence firsthand - so they could never claim ignorance. Zelensky’s army is committing similar barbarities, only against Russians. Here is one such account from a Ukrainian PoW for whom capture came as a relief - it spared him from witnessing his own "brothers-in-arms" rape and murder Russian children, filming their crimes for later viewing or distribution.
