🇵🇭 PHILIPPINES BRACES FOR ANOTHER SUPER TYPHOON Just days... after Typhoon Tino wrecked Cebu and killed over 200 people, another monster is on the way to the Philippines, and this one’s aiming for the island that holds Manila. Typhoon Fung-wong, locally named Uwan, is spinning with winds up to 185 kph and could slam into Luzon on Sunday night. The Philippines can’t catch a break in the wake... of Typhoon Kalmaegi (TinoPH), because just as that system heads deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, a new leviathan has emerged from the depths of the Pacific. On the right side of this satellite loop is Tropical Storm Fung-wong, a sprawling embryonic cyclone in the Philippine Sea. She may be weak and disorganized now, but the environment ahead is going to be favorable for rapid intensification. The island of Luzon is her most likely target for landfall. In the blink of an eye, Pacific Hurricane Genevieve... has wildly exceeded her forecast from last night. Originally anticipated to hit a brief Category 3 peak, Genevieve’s winds have suddenly exploded in the last 24 hours, doubling from 60 MPH to 120 MPH. A 150 MPH, near-Category 5 maximum intensity is now predicted by the NHC; and if that verifies, then Genevieve is without a doubt on the verge of becoming a visually spectacular fish storm.show more

Based on her radar presentation, Noul did not stop organizing and intensifying until her core fully crawled onto land. Super Typhoon Ragasa (NandoPH) has left the Babuyan Islands... of the Philippines in darkness. Now, after finally weakening just below Category 5 intensity, this monstrous storm’s convection is suddenly re-freezing around his still-perfect, ~925 MBAR stadium eye over the South China Sea. With favorable conditions ahead, Ragasa could weaken very gradually and remain a major Typhoon by the time he makes landfall in southern China. However, the track will be important. The further south Ragasa trends, the more strength he’ll lose due to land interaction.show more

Super Typhoon Sinlaku’s 185 MPH peak strength a few... hours ago was very close to her Maximum Potential Intensity. In other words, Sinlaku generated the highest possible sustained wind speeds that a storm could theoretically produce over these specific water temperatures and atmospheric conditions in the West Pacific. Historically speaking, this is extremely rare, and similar to what we saw with Hurricane Melissa last year in the Caribbean Sea.show more

The previously unnamed Tropical Storm in the shallow Malacca... Strait has since been given the name Senyar. The system made landfall over the city of Langsa in Aceh, Indonesia at a 50 mph (80 kph), 996 mbar peak intensity. But Senyar isn’t done. The storm has now RE-EMERGED into the Malacca Strait and is forecast to soon make a second landfall, this one in Malaysia. While Senyar won’t be very strong (potentially only ~40 mph), a Malaysian landfall by a bonafide tropical cyclone is historically rare, as few storms on record have formed this close to the equator (due to the weakness of the Coriolis Effect here).show more

🇹🇼 At least 51 people have been injured in... Taiwan as Typhoon Fung-Wong sweeps across the island. Authorities evacuated more than 8,300 residents from coastal and mountain areas and closed schools as the tropical storm reached Taiwan’s southern regions. Earlier, Fung-Wong hit the Philippines as a super typhoon, causing floods, landslides, and killing at least 27 people. The storm has since weakened but continues to bring heavy rain and flooding. The worst-affected area is Hualien County, where floodwaters swept away a car, and rivers have already overflowed their banks.show more

After her first eyewall replacement attempt resulted in a... merger that pushed her to a 165 MPH, 913 mbar peak, Super Typhoon Bavi is finally in the throes of a true EWRC. The thick and persistent nature of her inner core is still protecting a stellar Stadium Effect in the eye, but her infrared satellite signature shows a textbook EWRC structure developing, with a pronounced moat thawing out between the colder, dueling eyewalls. Confidence for a direct or near-direct landfall over the tiny island of Rota continues to increase today; however, Guam should keep a very close eye out for any consistent southward jogs in Bavi’s motion. Even a small deviation could expose the 165,000 residents there to high-end Category 4 or 5 winds.show more

Definitely getting concerned about the storm surge threat in... Baler Bay. Huge waves from Typhoon Fung-wong (UwanPH) are already crashing into the Aurora coastline of Luzon, and if the storm makes landfall just south of the bay, it could push a dangerous flow of seawater directly into Baler. Widespread reports are also indicating that substantial freshwater flash flooding is ongoing in multiple locations.
