We are about to see one of the largest rain events that’s ever been triggered in the continental United States by a Pacific Hurricane. After making landfall in Baja California, the saturated remnants of former-Category 5 Hurricane Polo are going to inject a massive conveyor belt of deep, tropical moisture up through NW Mexico and into the U.S. South-Central Texas could be at the epicenter of the event, with isolated rain totals potentially reaching up to a FOOT this week.

The National Hurricane Center has raised Hurricane Simon to an even stronger peak intensity of 155 MPH (250 kph) and 928 MBAR. If the storm follows the exact track of the latest cone, then the tiny fishing village of Pérula could be annihilated. In this current possible scenario, Simon’s eastern eyewall would strike the village with full-force. Beachside homes that aren’t destroyed by extreme Category 4 winds would likely be swept into a devastating storm surge, created by the Hurricane’s direct onshore flow into Pérula’s bay-shaped eddy of coastline. The NHC forecast for Hurricane Polo has taken a slightly concerning turn for the rural desert communities of Baja California, Mexico. Instead of making landfall as a weakening CAT 1, it now appears that Polo may instead strike land as an intense, 111+ MPH (180+ kph) CAT 3, which would make him only the 4TH Major Hurricane on record to hit the peninsula. Wind shear in the area is progressively decreasing, and water temps remain at a succulent ~84 F (29 C). Hurricane Warnings are in effect from Estero de la Bocana to Puerto San Carlos.
