Vintage Camera Experts 🎥 We appreciate all the camera... operator experts and enthusiast that have been reaching out. Ideally, we would love a robust army of imagers helping us gather as much imagery as possible - from different angles, distances, and altitudes with a variety of equipment. Two of the primary challenges for our camera operators right now are digital interference and the extreme speed and movement of the objects. For the former, there seems to be something about the phenomenon that interferes with digital camera technology. Because of this we are looking to also add a vintage camera suite. There’s lots of evidence that suggests analog imagery of the phenomenon produces better results in some circumstances. In regards to the speed and movement challenge, please see the below video clip from episode two. This is what we are dealing with. Note the speed and movement of the Tic Tacs at 100% vs. 15% . I think it's interesting that we're starting to see... different types of specialists emerge in the field of Generative AI technology. We are seeing a new generation of world-class storytellers. Some are immaculate at vibe coding workflows and building infrastructures. Some are incredible at AI visual effects and AI cinematography. And some are just maestros at composition and world-building. And of course, many of us dip into all facets. We are witnessing the emergence of new creative and technical roles that didn't exist yesterday, and that's very exciting. Just two months ago, we were on the verge... of letting go of a customer that we had been serving for more than two years. The prices were super competitive as they were procuring these springs from China. According to our cost calculations, we would have to sell them these springs at our breakeven price point. We would not be making any profit from their orders. The volumes were huge and we decided to take up the challenge. In manufacturing, one of the very important metric that your product cost depends on is cycle time. The speed at which we are able to process that part within the desired tolerance. Higher the speed at which you can manufacture, lower the cost of making that component. We could only manage 150 pcs/minute on our imported machines. At this speed, it was unviable for us. It would only make sense for us to continue if we were somehow able to manufacture this spring at a minimum of 200 pcs/minute. We were far apart and it seemed we wouldn’t be able to reach that goal. We were on the verge of giving up after two years of persistent effort in increasing our speed. Today, we manufactured that same spring on the CNC machines that we built in-house at a whopping 220 pcs/minute! We went from almost letting go off that customer to now asking that very same customer to increase our order volumes! First video is our imported machine at 150 pcs/minute. To our customers and users who have been asking, here’s how we got here: The past several months have been some of the most interesting and intense of my life. It all started with the rise of Instagram Threads, which presented us with the opportunity to sell our domains. Around the same time, a handful of companies approached us, wondering if we would be open to an acquisition. When this happened in the past, we would politely decline. However, this time, things were different. We weren't that excited about the time it would take to invest in a rebrand, and with mind-warping technological advances now being a commodity, we were excited about joining a place where we could tinker at scale. Each company we chatted with was incredible. However, what ultimately led us to choose Shopify over others was their culture; two distinct things in particular: 1) Craft-obsessed. Their obsession with not just building the right thing, but also building it the right way is inspiring. Sacrifice shows priority, and hearing stories about some of the hard decisions they made to ensure that what they ship is robust, scalable, and trustworthy, even at the cost of short-term metric gains, really proved that their obsession with craft was much more than a feel-good slogan. Their discussions and decisions have me truly believing they're going to be around for 100 years. 2) For entrepreneurs, by entrepreneurs. Just about every product and engineering leader I met was an ex-founder who grinded for years to turn nothing into something. They all still had that air of resilience, obsession with the details at every part of the stack, and a compelling vision of the future for whatever they were working on. Threads leadership is also made up of ex-founders, so the entrepreneurial focus at Shopify made it clear that it would be the best environment for us to grow and thrive.
