The basic idea behind carbon credits is to use market mechanisms to control emissions. Carbon credits can be bought and sold on carbon markets, and this trading helps to set a price on carbon. Raising animals, particularly cows, for meat has the biggest impact on the climate and the environment of all foods. Animal agriculture contributes at least 16.5 percent of total global emissions. The reason that ruminant animals like cows are so bad for the climate is that they produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas with up to 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. In addition, the vast amount of land used to graze animals or grow food to feed them — 80 percent of all agricultural land — could otherwise be absorbing carbon if it were returned to nature. Copepods, could stop climate change 5 gigatons of these... 1mm-sized zooplankton called COPEPODS live in all the world’s Oceans. This is equivalent to 17 million 747 jets, and if you laid the jets end to end, they would go around the planet 31 times. The copepods migrate from around 200m below the ocean surface every night to feed on plants (phytoplankton) at the surface. It is the greatest mass migration of animals on the planet, and it happens twice a day. The vertical motion of the copepods moves just about as much water as the moon and the tides. The copepods eat 30 times more carbon than humanity generates from burning fossil fuels, and about 6%, or 3 gigatons, of their dead bodies and poop end up in the world’s largest carbon bank, the Abyss. The Abyss contains 500m to 1000’s of meters thick layer of organic carbon / mineral sludge with an area greater area than dry land on the planet. Yet humanity has wiped out more than 50% of marine plankton productivity over the last 70 years due to chemical and particle pollution. We have also wiped out 50% of Arctic krill, which are just as important. and we are now even contemplating dredging the ocean floor! We would not have had climate change if we had not poisoned and destroyed most of the world’s oceans. By 2045, the destruction will be complete unless we act now to stop the inevitable annihilation of nature and life on Earth. A developing early-season Nor'easter will bring a prolonged period... of strong winds, coastal flooding, and rain from New York City to Boston this Friday into the weekend! A developing coastal storm is forecast to track up the Eastern Seaboard and stall off the Northeast coast, delivering a prolonged period of wet and windy weather from Friday through Sunday. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible along the coast, particularly from the New York City area up through Boston. Even stronger wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are possible over Cape Cod and the islands! The storm will also generate significant marine hazards, starting with a high risk of rip currents and building surf ahead of the system through the middle of the week. By Friday and Saturday, persistent northeast winds combined with high astronomical tides from a full moon will pile water along the shoreline. This combination will likely result in multiple cycles of minor coastal flooding and significant beach erosion, with eastern-facing beaches at the greatest risk. While exact rainfall totals will depend on how close the center of the storm tracks to the coast, the heaviest rain is currently favored over eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Long Island. These areas could see up to 3-5 inches of rain through Saturday night, though widespread freshwater flooding is not currently a major concern.show more
