The rule in MLB is a sacrifice fly must be caught by an outfielder, or an infielder running into the outfield. I believe this will get appealed and changed as Devers is running into the outfield, and the fact that he stopped running to catch it doesn’t negate that. The scorer might be ruling this not a sacrifice fly because it was caught by an infielder, missing the “infielder running into the outfield” caveat. Here, Curtis Mead is picked off and decides to run way left of second base, and the throw from Willson Contreras hits him. For scoring purposes, this is a pickoff and a stolen base for Mead, because he took off on the pickoff and never stops or hesitates going to second, so even though the throw hits Mead, by rule it has to be a stolen base. Rules wise, this is a legal move by Mead. He isn't out of the base path because you can establish your own path, and if you don't want to run in a straight line, you don't have to (otherwise there would be no rounding of bases). First, this is the correct scoring, as this is a single. If this were a ground ball to short, and the runner is out 6-5 at third on a ball that would have otherwise been a hit, this would have been a fielder's choice, and the difference is in the wording on rule 9.05(b)(3), which says that you do not score a hit when a: (3) pitcher, the catcher or any infielder handles a batted ball and puts out a preceding runner who is attempting to advance one base or to return to his original base, or would have put out such runner with ordinary effort except for a fielding error. The Official Scorer shall charge the batter with a time at bat but no hit; The key is in the McKinstry play, the ball is handled by an outfielder, and not the pitcher, catcher, or any infielder. OK, I have a definitive word on the CJ... Abrams play from today's Pittsburgh Pirates at Washington Nationals game after talking with Elias Sports Bureau on this. This play will stay as a sacrifice fly. The originial ruling of NOT a sacrifice fly was for the exact same reason that I thought, which is that the infielder is not running into the outfield, which is year's past would have been correct As it was explained to me, in past years, an infielder had to be running almost in a straight line towards the outfield wall to be considered "running in the outfield". Here, since he is running, and he ends up further away from home (157 feet) than when he started (145 feet), this is going to count as a sacrifice fly. That definition is changing, in part from this play to help bring greater consistency, and to take some of the guesswork out of it (the argument that he is running into the outfield as opposed to more parallel). Now, folks all the time ask "why doesn't MLB publish the OS Manual" and I always say because it is a living document that can have the wording change, and the wording for this play will be modified to something like "more towards the outfield wall than towards home plate" to eliminate any confusion. The big key to this play is that he was running on a full sprint. Also, and this is helpful for me, but for all fly ball outs that score a run, Elias Saba reviews to ensure consistency. So, yes, it's a sacrifice fly, and now that I have that info from Elias themselves, that sort of settles this one. Sounds like the guidelines for this definition will be changing, either this season, or certainly for next season.show more

Not a change, but I've had a TON of... folks asking if this is getting changed from June 10. This is a ball hit by Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and it was ruled an error on Jake Mangum of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The only thing I can think of is that Mookie didn't appeal, because this is a base hit, it's always been a base hit, and it will continue to be a base hit. Except on this one play. There is no way a sliding attempt like this is an error. I know Mangum broke the wrong way, but that doesn't factor it ... it's the catch, the physical catch, and there is ZERO CHANCE this is ordinary effort. I know we talk changes here, but this non-change is the most confounding one for me since Aaron Judge's first career walk-off hit, which was the most obvious fielder's choice of all time, but because it was the last play of the season, it didn't get appealed or changed.show more
