The separatists mistakenly believe that Trump’s recent comments signal... imminent recognition of Somaliland’s independence. The reality is far beyond that! The Trump administration is actually pursuing a peace agreement between Somalia’s federal government and the so-called secessionist region. This would allow the federal government access to Hargeisa, require Somaliland to accept its new borders, and stop opposing the newly recognized federal state in northeastern Somalia, the Northeast State. The separatists must abandon their unrealistic dreams. No one will recognize a state ruled by a single clan without a legitimate cause, especially in such a sensitive region as the Horn of Africa. Trump is clearly pursuing a Nobel Peace Prize and has demonstrated this approach in his foreign policy, pushing for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, reconciliation between Rwanda and the DRC, and aiming to resolve the separatist issue in Somalia.
