Why do babies “fake” cry? For the same reason... they really cry: to communicate their needs and seek the love and attention of their caregivers. Occasionally you’ll see such behaviors described to as manipulative, with some even going so far as to suggest children’s fake cries are to be ignored. You’ll find me on the opposite side of that debate. Fake cries are a communication tool common to infants and toddlers whose expressive language simply isn’t developed quite to the point that they can express their needs using words. For that reason you may find this behavior increase between, say, 10-18 months. Fake cries are just your maturing baby relying on the tool that’s always drawn your attention in the past. This sweet little guy, shared to IG by parentingessentials, doesn’t seem to be in too much distress… in fact he seems to be enjoying the interaction with mom, which may itself be the message his cry was intended to communicate: come play with/talk to me. But a fake cry is also a great opportunity to assess the state of other needs. Might a diaper need changing? Is it meal time? Time for a change of scenery? After the Striker spends 100 MPH videos blew up... not too long ago, you couldn’t find a video without seeing comments of his mechanics needing improvement and just kind of absurd reasons as to why his mechanics need to improve. Keep in mind this is a 16 year old kid throwing 100 MPH. Can he really throw 100 MPH with as many of the mechanical flaws as the Instagram comments make him out to have? Or are mechanics subjective and majority of what people think creates elite throwers just not really matter like they think it does? With that being said here are couple subjective thoughts that I have on this throw: Passive lower half, doesn’t push/jump to try to create velocity. Setting up torso in a great spot at foot plant, not forcing it True rotation, pelvis rotates torso follows, minimal counter rotation You can agree or disagree with what my thoughts are, which makes the point of speaking the same language between coaches and athletes constantly so important. Did you know that babies cry with an accent?... This week I’ll be focusing on language acquisition during infancy. Yesterday we talked about how newborns enter the world already recognizing the distinct tones of their mothers’ voices, as well as the rhythms and patterns of what will become their native language. And that recognition is not only receptive (the language we hear and understand), but expressive (the language we speak). Which leads us to crying with accent. A study that compared the cries of French and German infants identified distinct patterns their cries - measured as early as the day after their births - that mirror the unique melodies (or prosody) of their native languages. The French infants ended their cries with a lilt that mirrored French, while German infants began their cries with intensity then dropped off at the end, mirroring the vocalizations of their German parents. It’s still more evidence that some basic forms of language learning are influenced by children’s experience (learning) in utero. When it comes to our earliest vocalizations, newborns rely heavily on cries - which often tend to be a bit screechier than they will become in time - alongside gurgles, grunts and squeaks (like those shown in the video here.) How many guesses have been propagated as truth? How many small differences have been exaggerated so large that they become the very core of their position? Probably a lot, because the trend I see is to take a kernel of truth and cover it with heavy layers of lies and speculation. You may win without it, and let skill and strategy shine, but it won't be sustainable The things that Jordan does extremely well that need to be highlighted are: - energy - communication - mid-rounding voice - emotional awareness - effort - mental resilience - ability to stay focused when the match matters High Performance is a combination of talent and skills for sure, but more importantly it's: - attitude - behaviours - consistency - mindset - focused attention - awareness of mental intensity - intention to improve - intention to execute As you continue to build your skills in game, be sure to elevate your High Performance skills overall. It starts with awareness, then influence, then consistency! I had the same thought so I've been playing... with it in nanochat. E.g. here's 8 agents (4 claude, 4 codex), with 1 GPU each running nanochat experiments (trying to delete logit softcap without regression). The TLDR is that it doesn't work and it's a mess... but it's still very pretty to look at :) I tried a few setups: 8 independent solo researchers, 1 chief scientist giving work to 8 junior researchers, etc. Each research program is a git branch, each scientist forks it into a feature branch, git worktrees for isolation, simple files for comms, skip Docker/VMs for simplicity atm (I find that instructions are enough to prevent interference). Research org runs in tmux window grids of interactive sessions (like Teams) so that it's pretty to look at, see their individual work, and "take over" if needed, i.e. no -p. But ok the reason it doesn't work so far is that the agents' ideas are just pretty bad out of the box, even at highest intelligence. They don't think carefully though experiment design, they run a bit non-sensical variations, they don't create strong baselines and ablate things properly, they don't carefully control for runtime or flops. (just as an example, an agent yesterday "discovered" that increasing the hidden size of the network improves the validation loss, which is a totally spurious result given that a bigger network will have a lower validation loss in the infinite data regime, but then it also trains for a lot longer, it's not clear why I had to come in to point that out). They are very good at implementing any given well-scoped and described idea but they don't creatively generate them. But the goal is that you are now programming an organization (e.g. a "research org") and its individual agents, so the "source code" is the collection of prompts, skills, tools, etc. and processes that make it up. E.g. a daily standup in the morning is now part of the "org code". And optimizing nanochat pretraining is just one of the many tasks (almost like an eval).
