The YF-23 Black Widow! What could have been...

YF-23 was stealthier and faster than the YF-22, but... the 22 is more agile. They only built 2 of these.show more

The fighter that almost became America's next air superiority... jet... 🇺🇸✈️ Meet the YF-23 "Black Widow II", the stealth fighter that came within one decision of replacing the F-15 instead of the F-22. Despite its futuristic design, higher top speed, and exceptional stealth, the YF-23 lost the U.S. Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter competition. The YF-22 ultimately won thanks to its superior agility, thrust-vectoring potential, and lower technical risk, making it the better fit for the Air Force's mission.show more

America could have built THIS instead of the F-22…... The YF-23 Black Widow II was built for the USAF’s Advanced Tactical Fighter competition and it was brutally stealthy. ◆ Diamond-shaped wings + blended fuselage ◆ Distinctive V-tail ◆ Low-observable design optimized for stealth ◆ Twin engines with afterburning power ◆ Designed around speed, range, and reduced radar signature So why did it lose? The YF-22 offered greater agility and demonstrated stronger overall maneuverability, while also meeting the Air Force’s requirements for supercruise and air-combat performance. The YF-22 ultimately won and evolved into the F-22 Raptor. Only two YF-23s were ever built. Should the USAF build a modern YF-23 today? #YF23 #BlackWidow #F22 #MilitaryAviation #Aviationshow more
