This might be the most terrifying-looking military aircraft ever built 😱 The new Japanese XEC-2 "Platypus" looks more like a sci-fi villain than an aircraft. If the goal was to make something absolutely terrifying, they nailed it. I bet those giant side pods (“tumours”) are packed with every piece of cutting-edge electronic warfare hardware imaginable. Ever wondered why this sensor disappears into the aircraft? 👀 The JASDF U-125A carries a retractable Mitsubishi Electric thermal imaging turret that stays tucked inside the fuselage during transit. Keeping the turret stowed helps reduce drag at speed while protecting the sensitive optics from the elements. When it’s time for a search-and-rescue mission, the doors open and the turret deploys beneath the aircraft to scan for heat signatures. It had MK-56 boosters for takeoff, Shrike rockets for descent and ASROC rockets for braking The plan was to land inside Tehran’s Amjadieh Stadium, extract the American hostages, and get out. The footage shows the insane part: rockets firing as the Hercules accelerates like a fighter jet, surrounded by smoke and flames.
