He’s Fine With That Mayor Zohran Mamdani is requiring longtime New York City residents who live in the city full-time to prove it — simply to avoid a new surcharge on their homes. Notices have been sent telling some owners they “may” face five-figure tax bills unless they submit documentation confirming their property is a primary residence. When pressed on the errors, the mayor largely dismissed the concerns, stating that the Department of Finance had “identified homes that may be subject to the surcharge” and that owners have time to appeal. “As required by the law, the Department of Finance sent informational resources to homeowners to ensure that they understood the tax… and also if they did not believe it to apply to them, that they had the time in order to be able to appeal,” Mamdani said. Fight Far From Over Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s botched pied-à-terre tax rollout is back on after an appellate court temporarily lifted a lower-court pause Thursday. The full legal challenge continues. Former First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro, representing homeowners suing the city, didn’t hold back: “It is a shame that the City can’t own up to its own mistakes and admit that it has badly botched the rollout of this surcharge. Instead, the administration is doubling down, going to court to ensure that it can continue harassing and threatening New York City homeowners who clearly are permanent residents — something the City would know if it would only do its homework.” Mastro also called the city’s rush to keep the notices flowing “an astonishing display of chutzpah” and said: “You can’t terrorize first and then clarify.” My take: The pied-à-terre tax was a bad idea in itself. A health hazard is looming as there has been a plumbing challenge that has continued and worsened for over 3 weeks now with the council sewer system. Despite incessant reports and requests for assistance our complaints have not been attended and they keep saying plumbers will attend to the problem. The City of London Corporation has released new images... of how London's skyline could appear in 2032 if all buildings that have either been granted planning permission, or are already under construction, are fully completed. The images show how several notable new skyscrapers would appear on the skyline, including the 309.6-metre 1 Undershaft (set to become the UK's new joint-tallest building), 85 Gracechurch Street and 60 Gracechurch Street. A great #ChinatownYVR irony: This week, Mayor Mayor Ken... Sim named the City's satellite office in the City of Vancouver-owned #ChinatownYVR Plaza mall after Won Alexander Cumyow, a civil rights advocate and Chinatown leader. Ironically, the recent incident of seniors being policed out of exercising at the very same mall remains unresolved by the City, leaving Chinatown seniors without a suitable space to exercise. Here's the latest update on the situation from Stephanie Leo, Yarrow Intergenerational Society for Justice 世代同行會 volunteer and Co-Chair of the City's former #ChinatownYVR Legacy Stewardship Group: "Staff of the Yarrow Chinese Seniors Hub were conducting an exercise class within the Chinatown Plaza before mall hours at approximately 9:00am. City staff began harassing the 60 seniors and threatening to call the police unless they vacated the premises. When I arrived at 9:30am, a police officer was in attendance aiding plaza staff in dispersing the crowd of seniors. I witnessed and documented fear, disappointment and comments about concerns for personal safety. These seniors referenced the incident on May 29th when they spoke to the Development Permit Board regarding Beedie Living’s #105Keefer application. For the seniors, Yarrow staff and myself, this police incident and 105 Keefer are inextricably connected and speaks to the larger issue of availability of safe space for folks to gather and participate in cultural activities. For community members, this raises two key questions: What specific reasons was a gathering in a public space seen as a threat? Why was the situation escalated to law enforcement so quickly? I have requested a meeting with the appropriate staff from the City Manager’s Office to find a resolution as the Chinese Seniors Hub members are without a suitable space to exercise. Additionally, they have not seen a follow up with city staff of the Chinatown Plaza by way of an apology. Currently, the general feeling from the seniors is that the very community which Mayor and Council hope to engage with by having a Chinatown office are those least welcome in this space. I sent the above to the city a month ago and there has been no resolution. The seniors deserve and are asking for an apology, in person, and in their spoken languages, with tangible solutions like cultural safety training for Plaza staff to address the mishandling of seniors gathering to do Tai Chi and a commitment to providing them community space. Property taxes help fund schools, roads, emergency services, and... local infrastructure. That part of the system matters and most people understand why those taxes exist. But the conversation changes when an 85 year old retiree on a fixed income is paying $15,000 a year just to stay in a home they already paid off decades ago. Property taxes are tied to rising home values. As neighborhoods become more expensive, assessments increase and tax bills rise with them. The problem is that homeowners do not need to sell their property, earn more income, or receive any actual cash for those bills to go up. A couple who bought a modest home in the late 1980s may now live in a property worth several times what they originally paid. On paper, they look wealthier. In reality, they may still be relying entirely on Social Security or retirement savings that have not kept pace with rising costs. That creates a situation where people can become “house rich but cash poor.” They technically own valuable property, but the monthly tax burden can become impossible to manage. Many states do offer relief programs for seniors, including homestead exemptions, tax freezes, and income based credits. But these programs are often difficult to access, limited by strict qualifications, or reduced when budgets tighten. The people who need the help most are often the least likely to successfully navigate the system. It is possible to support property taxes as a way to fund essential public services while also recognizing that the system needs reform for older homeowners living on fixed incomes. Those ideas can exist together. You can’t expect someone who’s 67, or 72, or 85 to keep paying the government $10,000-15,000 every year just to live in their own paid off house. My 2nd trip to Memphis is almost over and... I’ve again really enjoyed my time here. So I felt the need to say something, especially after what LeBron said today. This city often gets a very bad rep and I’ve experienced that myself. Players shitting on it, media saying it’s dangerous, people asking me why I’d go here because I wouldn’t be safe, I’ve heard it all. All those people couldn’t be more wrong. This is a city very different from other “typical American cities”. Memphis has it’s own identity, an identity that makes it special. Memphis is a very warm and welcoming city. From the second my first trip started last year I’ve felt welcomed by the people. In the Fedexforum, on the streets, in the airport, in my hotel. My experiences have been nothing but positive. Not once have I felt unsafe or anything remotely close to it, not in my week long stay last year and also not in my almost 2 week long stay this year. Now of course every city has its weaknesses and room for improvement. And that’s where I have to give a lot of credit to the mayor and the people who run this city. Even in the year between my trips there has been clear improvement. The streets are cleaner, there’s roadwork being done and downtown is noticeably more lively compared to last year. Don’t let people who have never been here tell you what and how this city is. Memphis is a unique and beautiful city, Memphis is Memphis. I have truly loved my time here and I can’t wait to keep coming back in the future. But first one more game against Toronto tomorrow.show more
