But the conversation changes when an 85 year old retiree on a fixed income is paying $15,000 a year just to stay in a home they already paid off decades ago. Property taxes are tied to rising home values. As neighborhoods become more expensive, assessments increase and tax bills rise with them. The problem is that homeowners do not need to sell their property, earn more income, or receive any actual cash for those bills to go up. A couple who bought a modest home in the late 1980s may now live in a property worth several times what they originally paid. On paper, they look wealthier. In reality, they may still be relying entirely on Social Security or retirement savings that have not kept pace with rising costs. That creates a situation where people can become “house rich but cash poor.” They technically own valuable property, but the monthly tax burden can become impossible to manage. Many states do offer relief programs for seniors, including homestead exemptions, tax freezes, and income based credits. But these programs are often difficult to access, limited by strict qualifications, or reduced when budgets tighten. The people who need the help most are often the least likely to successfully navigate the system. It is possible to support property taxes as a way to fund essential public services while also recognizing that the system needs reform for older homeowners living on fixed incomes. Those ideas can exist together. You can’t expect someone who’s 67, or 72, or 85 to keep paying the government $10,000-15,000 every year just to live in their own paid off house. My 2nd trip to Memphis is almost over and... I’ve again really enjoyed my time here. So I felt the need to say something, especially after what LeBron said today. This city often gets a very bad rep and I’ve experienced that myself. Players shitting on it, media saying it’s dangerous, people asking me why I’d go here because I wouldn’t be safe, I’ve heard it all. All those people couldn’t be more wrong. This is a city very different from other “typical American cities”. Memphis has it’s own identity, an identity that makes it special. Memphis is a very warm and welcoming city. From the second my first trip started last year I’ve felt welcomed by the people. In the Fedexforum, on the streets, in the airport, in my hotel. My experiences have been nothing but positive. Not once have I felt unsafe or anything remotely close to it, not in my week long stay last year and also not in my almost 2 week long stay this year. Now of course every city has its weaknesses and room for improvement. And that’s where I have to give a lot of credit to the mayor and the people who run this city. Even in the year between my trips there has been clear improvement. The streets are cleaner, there’s roadwork being done and downtown is noticeably more lively compared to last year. Don’t let people who have never been here tell you what and how this city is. Memphis is a unique and beautiful city, Memphis is Memphis. Devastating scenes near First Street tonight as an iconic... piece of Manchester’s history, The Hotspur Press building, has gone up in flames. Built on Gloucester Street by the banks of the River Medlock, it was thought to be Manchester’s oldest surviving mill. Originally a cotton mill known as Medlock Mill - itself a casualty of fire in 1801 - it was rebuilt and later purchased in 1902 by the Percy Brothers who turned it into a printing press responsible for publishing periodicals, classic film magazines and comics of the era. It was later home to a number of Manchester based artist studios for around a decade. After closure, due to leaks and safety issues in 2017, it sat empty until a planning application to regenerate Hotspur Press was unanimously approved by Manchester City Council in May 2024. However, it was subsequently delayed following an application to list the building and the redevelopment was paused while new plans were drawn up. Tonight, neighbouring flats have been evacuated and 20 fire engines from across Greater Manchester have been battling the blaze at the scene, with multiple jets and the air unit in use to prevent the spread of the fire. Train services through Oxford Road Station have been suspended overnight, as well as several streets closed in the surrounding area. In images and footage the building looks to have been completely gutted, but thankfully no injuries or casualties have been announced so far.show more
