Yesterday my dog, Fischer, died suddenly and unexpectedly. I’m... still in shock, blindsided by it all. He was as central a member of my family as any person. I’d like to tell you his story, briefly. 8 years ago, my 12-year old dog, Bandit, died after a long battle with kidney disease. A week later on a fishing trip, my brother encountered an abandoned, starving dog that swam out to his boat. When no owner could be found, I reluctantly took the dog in, and named him Fischer. I’m so glad I did. Along with his older sister, Daisy, he was my pandemic dog, my hiking buddy, and my left armrest while watching tv or gaming. He loved pawing at Red XIII (which we jokingly called him, the counterpart to my other dog, a Torgal lookalike), and he loved play fighting me while I tried to make my bed after he would crawl in it during the night. He loved playing fetch, and especially curling up against me for safety during storms. He was 90 pounds of rambunctious devotion. And God he loved me. We unknowingly spent his final morning on a hike. He chased and ran and played like usual. It was a perfect last memory with him, doing what we loved doing together most. He was “a fine hound,” and one of my favorite blessings. We’re going to miss him so much, but are so thankful for his life. That’s the thing about gratitude. It commingles with grief in such a way that both can breathe. And in that way, I guess I can breathe, too. At least, that’s what I’m trying to practice. Every gasp of sadness is met with an exhale of gratitude. I know many of you loved seeing him on stream. The couch behind me may have a Red XIII-sized hole now, but I’ll always cherish the memories of us in that room. Maybe we’ll do a Fischer stream and talk about grief soon, but I’ll need a minute. I told my 65 year old father NOT TO... GO to the Pudgy Pop up! My parents live in NYC, I asked them about the pop-up to see how close it is. Turns out it's 50 minutes and 2 train rides away. I'm not gonna put him through that journey. Saturday night, he calls me up & sends me this video In the video, he says: "This is very very very incredible. So very! It's very beautiful!" I share this to say this is a 65 Yr old man who knows nothing about this world except what I share with him. He went to casually pick up an item & surprise us, waited in line, & got the warmest treatment from the team. Walked out with the Pudgy Bouquet for us and the Pax & Polly keychains for him and my mom (jealous) and stories he could not stop talking about The phone call was literally him just going on and on about the vibe, the staff, the smiles, the people and everything in between. My dad went to his first Pudgy event before I did & I'm happy for it! Thank you Pudgy Penguins for putting a smile on my old man's face and getting him to feel the Pudgy experience IRL. My wifey found him!!!!!! 2 miles into the Forrest!... We ran into some campers that saw him and split up into two directions. Wifey actually climbed up to the top of the mountain and found him hiding from wolves and coyotes and bears in like a rock cave. She took a video and saw his eyes glowing and he was keeping quiet which was smart cause of predators I had just buried my little dog after 20 years together and Bruno is only 4 so I feared the worst and wifey kept saying she’ll find him and she did in pitch black dark with just a flashlight after almost 5hrs Sorry for the drama but I had a presentation planned and my 11yr old daughter ran up and told me that one of the smaller kids opened one of the sliding doors and he went exploring but we have some construction going on so he couldn’t get to the park that we normally go to next to my house and he crossed a dark semi busy highway which was a first and ended up 2 miles into a pitch black Forrest How she found him I still don’t know. I had grabbed my tent ready to sleep the night deep in the woods too. But I got lucky, he’s the sweetest animal and my best friend we do everything together everyday and he sleeps in my bed with me every night so I was heart broken until my wife faced time’d me and said look who I found and I bust into tears of joy not gonna lie and said how the F did you find him, and she said his magical glowing eyes and for the first time I laughed and could feel my heart fill with joy Sorry for the long story.show more

I'm going to tell you all a story. Back... in November 2023, I attended the San Francisco Fan Expo. I was right in the middle of finishing all of my finals for San Francisco State University in order to graduate, but I wanted to go to the event to say hello to Tony Todd in person and congratulate him on his outstanding performance as Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. I was already lucky enough to briefly say hi to him during San Diego Comic-Con 2023, but it was in passing amongst a massive crowd of people and I barely had enough time to introduce myself. The moment I walked up to him at Fan Expo, he immediately remembered me from our brief interaction prior, already knew my name, and asked how I was doing in school. I was able to talk with him one-on-one for multiple days during the event, geek out about our favorite shared nerd culture, gift him with a Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Venom fan art print, and learn firsthand just how much he loved his work, his family, and all of his fans. During Fan Expo, there was a Q&A panel for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 which I was in attendance for. Tony & Nadji were able to answer several questions from fans about the game. When I walked up to the panel's microphone, my question in particular was about where they would like to see Miles & Venom go next within the Marvel's Spider-Man universe. Tony clearly adored the games, essentially said that he would love to see Venom "travel the world", and that he would want to keep playing the character forever. After I thanked them both for answering my question, Tony said something to me in front of everybody attending the panel that will stick with me for the rest of my life: "Everybody keep your eyes on this young man right here. He'll be working for Marvel someday." Tony's unfathomable kindness and warmth not only inspired me to graduate Magna Cum Laude from San Francisco State University, but they also furthered my drive to pursue my dreams within the industry. I am utterly gutted and heartbroken to hear about his passing. I genuinely feel like I've lost a close friend. But, above everything else, I am eternally grateful for everything that he has done for the entire Spider-Man community, as well as pouring his heart and soul into his craft which went on to inspire so many others.
