Whose Harvest? Achamyeleh Tamiru on #Irreechaa and the Appropriation of #Amhara Heritage In this discussion, researcher #Achamyeleh_Tamiru challenges the dominant political framing of #Irreechaa. Drawing on lexicographical, socio-economic, and historical sources, he argues that the festival originates in ancient highland #Amhara agrarian thanksgiving traditions. First, he advances a detailed linguistic argument, citing major Ge'ez and Amharic lexicons, including Aleqa Desta Teklewold's Addis Yamarigna Mezgebe Qalat and Kesate Birhan Tessema's dictionary, to contend that the term derives from an archaic Semitic, specifically Amharic, agrarian root: «እሬቻ የኦሮምኛ ቃል አይደለም፤ ነባር የአማርኛ ግሥ ነው። ትርጉሙም ‘ከመከር በፊት ደርሶ በበትር የተወቃ እህል/ሰብል’ ማለት ነው።» ("Irreechaa is not an Afaan Oromoo word; it is an archaic Amharic term referring to early-ripening grain threshed with sticks before the main harvest.") Second, he maintains that the rite is intrinsically tied to sedentary cereal farming. In his account, highland peasants celebrated the first fruits of fast-maturing crops, such as barley, peas, and maize, in the period following Meskel, a sentiment captured in a folk saying: «ገበሬው ‘እሰይ ነፍሴ ደረሰልኝ ገብሴ’ እያለ ከውኃ ዳር የሚያከብረው የምስጋና በዓል ነው።» ("It is a thanksgiving celebrated by the water's edge, where the farmer rejoices: 'Hurray, my soul, my barley has ripened for me!'") Achamyeleh notes that similar seasonal thanksgivings were historically observed across Shewa, Gojjam, and Wollo, and he points out that sites such as Hora were known as #Amhara Christian holy water (ጸበል) sanctuaries before the invasions and expansions of the #Oromo in the sixteenth century. Finally, drawing on regional historiography, notably the Wollega historical documents compiled by Alessandro Triulzi and Tesema Ta'a, he identifies what he regards as a historical contradiction: ancestral Borana pastoralists subsisted on dairy and livestock without cultivating grain. A pastoral culture without an agricultural base, he argues, could not have originated a festival explicitly devoted to early crop harvests. Achamyeleh concludes that the contemporary mass staging of #Irreechaa in Addis Ababa constitutes a politicized cultural appropriation, one intended to project ethno-territorial dominance over an ancient and shared highland agricultural heritage. This concern is not merely historical. In recent days, a sepia-toned image has circulated online purporting to show #Irreechaa celebrated at Lake Tana in an earlier era. The image bears strong signs of digital fabrication and has no verifiable archival source. When such images are presented as historical evidence, they do more than misinform; they rewrite the ritual geography of a shared heritage, which is precisely the dynamic Achamyeleh describes. Here is a slightly longer version of the ⬇️ video showing #ChalaAlemo in which he calls for the extermination of millions of #Amharas across #Ethiopia I have translated the whole Amharic incitement speech into English: “An Oromo youth has spoken saying you [The #Amhara people] have five years of live [to pack and leave]. Actually, he has given them too much time. I don’t understand why he said five years. You have five years to sell and eat what you have. In fact, five years is too many. I don’t know why he said that. He should say 1-2 years . We will be Interahamwe and eat you from that country [Ethiopia]. This will happen! as you [the #Amhara people] are incapable of embracing [and assimilating into] Oromoness/#Oromuma. We will cannibalize you like Injera [flat Ethiopian bread]. We will drink your blood. We will eat your flesh. We will burn your bones. Every single Oromo blood [death] will be retaliated/avenged by 1000 #Amhara blood [deaths]. To avenge 30 million Oromo blood, how many #Amhara blood do we need? Calculate and get ready for that. This is inevitable! Inevitable! Whether Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali 🇪🇹 continues to be the PM of [Ethiopia] or not, this is inevitable. We have told you; it will happen” How can Harvard University -which has just fired its first black woman president for on campus anti-Semitic incitement-tolerate such behavior?
