#antimicrobialresistance

#AntimicrobialResistance threatens to send us back to a time when even minor infections were untreatable. It already contributes to nearly 5 million deaths every year, driven by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, in both humans and animals. Stopping antimicrobial resistance is our shared responsibility.

I welcome and congratulate world leaders on their commitment to decisive action on #AntimicrobialResistance. Special thanks to my sister Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley for her leadership to make the declaration a success. If we translate it into action, we will help to track drug resistance, slow it down, expand access to antimicrobial medicines like antibiotics and spur the development of new ones Big day for global health! #UNGA

Today marks the start of World #AMR Awareness Week. #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) is not a future problem. It is a present crisis, causing more than one million deaths every year and undermining decades of medical progress. With the right policies, we can protect our people and our health systems. World Health Organization (WHO) calls on all countries to fully implement and fund their National Action Plans, strengthen #OneHealth systems, and keep antibiotics and life-saving medicines working for everyone. Let's act now. Protect our present. Secure our future.

#AntimicrobialResistance doesn’t just threaten to make the medicines we depend on less effective in the future; it’s happening now. We’re not just talking about the risk of people dying from antibiotic-resistant infections; they’re dying now – over a million people every year.

#AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) threatens to send the world back into the era before antibiotics and other antimicrobials, when a routine infection could be deadly. Addressing AMR, and preventing its further spread, requires leadership from all Member States, accountable stakeholders, and sustained financial support. Ahead of the #UNGA high-level meeting, I thank communities, health workers, youth organizations, parliamentarians, the private sector and the people directly affected by drug-resistant infections for joining yesterday’s multi-stakeholder hearing. By working together, we can chart a clear path towards a safer world for all.

To tackle #AntimicrobialResistance and shortages of antibiotics, we need to: 1. Increase R&D to fill the dry pipeline. 2. Reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in health care, agriculture and food production. 3. Expand regional and local production, particularly in lower-income countries.

#AntimicrobialResistance (#AMR) prevention cannot wait. AMR causes over 1 million deaths per year, undermines modern medicine and drives up treatment costs. Without urgent action, the impact will worsen. By 2050, AMR could lead to millions more deaths each year and make common infections increasingly difficult to treat. Strong policies = strong protection. Act now to protect our present and secure our future. Let’s handle antibiotics with care and keep these life-saving medicines working 💊. Learn more 👉

#AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing threats to health and development of our time. The irony of AMR is that it’s fuelled by the overuse of antibiotics yet more people die from lack of access to antibiotics. World Health Organization (WHO) welcomes the target set by countries to reduce annual global deaths associated with bacterial AMR by 10% by 2030. I couldn't agree more with my sister Mia Amor Mottley that we must hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve and deliver on the commitments made today. Together, we can protect these powerful medicines and the people whose lives depend on them, now and in the future. #UNGA

How would you feel if you needed antibiotics but they didn’t work? That's what happened to Vanessa Carter. She survived a serious car accident and required a 10-year facial reconstruction, only for it to be threatened by #AntimicrobialResistance. Vanessa & other #AMRsurvivors share their story ⬇️
