Today marks the start of World #AMR Awareness Week. #AntimicrobialResistance (AMR) is not a future problem. It is a present crisis, causing more than one million deaths every year and undermining decades of medical progress. With the right policies, we can protect our people and our health systems. World Health Organization (WHO) calls on all countries to fully implement and fund their National Action Plans, strengthen #OneHealth systems, and keep antibiotics and life-saving medicines working for everyone. Addressing AMR, and preventing its further spread, requires leadership from all Member States, accountable stakeholders, and sustained financial support. Ahead of the #UNGA high-level meeting, I thank communities, health workers, youth organizations, parliamentarians, the private sector and the people directly affected by drug-resistant infections for joining yesterday’s multi-stakeholder hearing. By working together, we can chart a clear path towards a safer world for all.

The irony of AMR is that it’s fuelled by the overuse of antibiotics yet more people die from lack of access to antibiotics. World Health Organization (WHO) welcomes the target set by countries to reduce annual global deaths associated with bacterial AMR by 10% by 2030. I couldn't agree more with my sister Mia Amor Mottley that we must hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve and deliver on the commitments made today. Together, we can protect these powerful medicines and the people whose lives depend on them, now and in the future. #UNGA
