On this day in 2006 Julian #Assange created WikiLeaks. Julian is 52 now. He was 38 when WikiLeaks published Collateral Murder and was last free. The video shows the US army killing a dozen civilians, including two Reuters employees on assignment and the rescuers who stopped to help the wounded. Reuters formally attempted to obtain the video but the Pentagon refused to hand it over. The evidence of what had happened remained on US military servers until intelligence whistleblower Chelsea Manning sent it to WikiLeaks. Collateral Murder had a massive impact. The millions of dollars that had been poured into Pentagon PR messaging couldn’t make the public unsee the war crime. #FreeAssangeNOW

We must recognise our media - strangled by money, more interested in access to power than holding it to account - is anything but free, a water carrier for political and corporate power, dedicated to enforcing the demands of global capital. Those like #Assange are the exception.

Julian #Assange is free. No thanks to Joe Biden, who carried the torch for Donald J. Trump's menacing attack on press freedom all the way to the end. Assange, a journalist, was coerced after 14 years of horrifically cruel detention into a guilty plea to an "espionage" charge. He is guilty of nothing but telling the truth. But freedom is freedom. He can go home with his head held high. No journalist gave more to end wars or hold power accountable. His contribution is immense. His sacrifice is hard to contemplate. His place in history is safe. Tens of thousands played a role in the campaign to #FreeAssange over the years. It was a long, hard road, but each can claim a share of this victory. Assange is finally free, but the warmongering he exposed goes on. We continue the fight.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva criticised the UK government for the imprisonment of Julian Assange and called it "shameful". Lula who was in London for the coronation of King Charles III condemned the treatment of #Assange and called for global action to free him.
