The bill, which mandates capital punishment for acts of blasphemy, raises several questions about religious freedom, minority rights, and the direction of secular democracy in India. Selective Protection of Religious Texts The bill reportedly offers protection only to the Guru Granth Sahib, without extending similar respect to sacred texts of #Hindus, #Christians, or other faiths. This selective framing has been criticized as discriminatory and divisive in a multi-faith state like Punjab. Death Penalty for Blasphemy The introduction of the death sentence for blasphemy is alarming and mirrors Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which have been widely condemned by international human rights organizations and the United Nations. #India has historically steered clear of such extreme punishments in the name of religious insult, valuing freedom of speech under its Constitution. Historical Precedents of Mob Violence Punjab has witnessed mob lynchings and killings inside Gurudwaras by #Sikhs over alleged acts of desecration or “beadbi.” Critics argue this law could legitimize vigilante justice and embolden extremist elements, leading to more extrajudicial killings. Targeting of Minorities Hindus fear the law will disproportionately affect Hindus, Christians, and Dalits, who have historically been vulnerable to communal tensions in the region. We Hindus believe , it as a tool for majoritarian dominance disguised as religious respect. Echoes of the Taliban and Pakistan The bill draws comparisons to Taliban-style governance and Pakistan's misuse of blasphemy laws to persecute religious minorities. Even the UN has condemned Pakistan's blasphemy laws for violating basic human rights. The fact that similar legislation is now entering Indian territory is being seen as a serious set back. Violation of Constitutional Values Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, subject to reasonable restrictions — not death penalties. This bill threatens the foundational principles of #IndianDemocracy and raises fears of a theocratic tilt in a secular state. Political and Social Fallout The move is being interpreted as a political stunt to appease religious hardliners, especially after the farmer protests where a Dalit Hindu man was brutally killed and hung over false blasphemy allegations.
