Karnataka FDA Cancels, Suspends Licences of 24 Pharma Traders in Fake Drug Case Bengaluru In a major regulatory crackdown following a large-scale #CounterfeitMedicine investigation, the Karnataka #FoodSafety and Drug Administration (#FDA) has cancelled the licences of 16 pharmaceutical distributors and retailers and suspended those of eight others. The penalised establishments were found to be involved in the distribution and sale of #SpuriousDrugs across the state. The regulatory action follows an August 18 raid conducted by the Drug Enforcement Wing of the #Karnataka FDA, during which enforcement officers busted an unlicensed repackaging and relabelling operation running covertly from a farmhouse in Kurubarakeranahalli, Bidadi, in #Bengaluru South district. The investigation revealed that the syndicate procured low-cost generic drugs from neighbouring states, repackaged them into vials and affixed forged labels resembling expensive life-saving medications manufactured by multinational pharmaceutical companies. The counterfeit labels also carried non-functional QR codes intended to mislead buyers. Investigators further uncovered boxes of expired pharmaceuticals that were allegedly being prepared for re-entry into the market. According to the Health Department, a stringent criminal case has been registered under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Counterfeit and fake medicines are classified as spurious drugs under Section 17B of the Act. The manufacture, sale, stocking or distribution of such drugs is treated as a grave offence under Section 27, which prescribes a punishment ranging from a minimum of 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment to life imprisonment, in addition to substantial fines. The Karnataka Health Minister U. T. Khader said that such activities will not be tolerated and that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to trace everyone involved in the scandal. He added that strict action will be taken against all those found responsible. A Special Investigation Team (#SIT) is continuing its probe into the racket.
