Karnataka FDA Cancels, Suspends Licences of 24 Pharma Traders in Fake Drug Case Bengaluru In a major regulatory crackdown following a large-scale #CounterfeitMedicine investigation, the Karnataka #FoodSafety and Drug Administration (#FDA) has cancelled the licences of 16 pharmaceutical distributors and retailers and suspended those of eight others. The penalised establishments were found to be involved in the distribution and sale of #SpuriousDrugs across the state. The regulatory action follows an August 18 raid conducted by the Drug Enforcement Wing of the #Karnataka FDA, during which enforcement officers busted an unlicensed repackaging and relabelling operation running covertly from a farmhouse in Kurubarakeranahalli, Bidadi, in #Bengaluru South district. The investigation revealed that the syndicate procured low-cost generic drugs from neighbouring states, repackaged them into vials and affixed forged labels resembling expensive life-saving medications manufactured by multinational pharmaceutical companies. The counterfeit labels also carried non-functional QR codes intended to mislead buyers. Investigators further uncovered boxes of expired pharmaceuticals that were allegedly being prepared for re-entry into the market. According to the Health Department, a stringent criminal case has been registered under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Counterfeit and fake medicines are classified as spurious drugs under Section 17B of the Act. The manufacture, sale, stocking or distribution of such drugs is treated as a grave offence under Section 27, which prescribes a punishment ranging from a minimum of 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment to life imprisonment, in addition to substantial fines. The Karnataka Health Minister U. T. Khader said that such activities will not be tolerated and that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to trace everyone involved in the scandal. Bengaluru Food Safety Crackdown: Expired Meat, Fungal Vegetables Seized at Luxury Hotels Bengaluru In a sweeping crackdown on food safety violations, the #FoodSafety Wing of the Health and Family Welfare Department on Friday raided 26 three‑star and five‑star #hotels across #Bengaluru, exposing severe lapses in hygiene and regulatory compliance. Operating under the guidance of Health Minister U.T. Khader, thirty teams of Food Safety Officers carried out surprise inspections across all #GBA zones in Bengaluru Urban District. The drive was aimed at enforcing the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and related licensing rules. Officials reported widespread contamination and unsafe storage practices. Fungal vegetables and expired dairy, bakery items, chicken, fish and meat were found in several kitchens. Inspections also revealed improper segregation of vegetarian and non‑vegetarian food, misbranding of products, and non‑compliance with #FSSAI labeling norms. Many kitchens were unhygienic, with poorly maintained storage areas that posed serious risks to public health. The raids led to the destruction of hundreds of kilograms of unsafe food: 1. #RadissonBlu (The Atria): 105 kg of expired food, including 50 kg chicken, 25 kg meat, 23 kg fish, and 7 kg vegetables were seized. 2. #TheLalitAshok (Annex South): 76 kg meat, 200 kg vegetables and 32 liters of expired were seized and destroyed. 3. #Taj Yeshwantpur: 72 kg of meat and fish. 4. #FourSeasons Bengaluru: 19 kg of meat was seized. 5. #ShangriLa Bengaluru: 15 kg of meat was seized. 6. #Vivanta Whitefield: 3 kg of expired bakery products. The Commissioner of Food Safety confirmed that notices have been issued to the concerned Food Business Operators. Adjudication proceedings will follow under the provisions of the Act. Officials have warned all hotels and food businesses to ensure strict compliance, cautioning that further action will be taken once laboratory analysis of collected samples is complete. H-FAST seizes 25 Tonnes of Harmful Chemical-laced #Adulterated #Spices , such as Cloves, Jeera, Ajwain, Mustard.., Arrests 3 in #Hyderabad . A Major Crackdown by Hyderabad Police's #HFAST and #FoodSafety officials has exposed the alleged use of #Synthetic Colours, Industrial Dyes and other Harmful substances to Adulterate Spices and make them look brighter, heavier and more expensive. The Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST) of Hyderabad police in joint coordination with the GHMC’s Food Safety Department conducted a major enforcement drive against certain spice trading and processing establishments across the Hyderabad Commissionerate limits. During the operation, enforcement teams inspected 13 business establishments and independent business locations which were actively engaged in the procurement, processing, and wholesale or retail trading of spices and also indulging certain offences affecting human health. A total of 25 tonnes of various spices found to be containing certain dangerous chemicals and hazardous substances were seized during the raids. The police identified the widespread use of synthetic harmful chemicals to human food and also colours, including bush synthetic orange red and green food colours, alongside dangerous poisonous substances such as cloth dyes, industrial-grade permanent colors, shining powder (talcum powder), and rice bran oil.
