While watching #Haq movie, I realised that the Shah Bano case was truly the turning point in Indian history. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi, on the advice of Arun Nehru, gave a green signal to open the locks of the Babri Masjid, an attempt to appease Hindus after his controversial decision (to make mullahs happy) on the Shah Bano judgment. Soon after, Rajiv Gandhi regretted the move and wanted to reverse it, but it was too late. BJP-RSS-VHP had already ignited the Ram Mandir movement. And the rest, is history.

One of the most impactful moments from #Haq , the Shah Bano biopic. Shah Bano should have been one of India’s biggest feminist icons, a woman who stood up for dignity and basic justice, her fight was for nothing more than fair maintenance guaranteed by the Constitution. But her name was buried under religious appeasement, political cowardice, and actual patriarchy. And the biggest irony is that the same modern feminists who celebrate alimony, maintenance, and property rights as empowerment suddenly go silent on Shah Bano. They won’t celebrate her or demand what she fought for, and what remains unfulfilled, because even they bow to the same religious bigotry that crushed her.
