Listen, Reno. We need to have a serious conversation. The NWS Reno says increasing winds will bring elevated fire weather conditions through the weekend. The #BugFire may be nearing 100% containment, but crews are still actively fighting the #HawkFire. At the same time, firefighters have had to respond to several unrelated fires around Reno. This is the week to be extra cautious and help prevent the next fire! If you are recreating outdoors, use common sense. Don’t drag trailer chains, park on dry grass, target shoot near vegetation or use equipment that could create a spark. Follow all closures, and absolutely do not fly a drone near a wildfire. One careless decision can start a fire, pull already-stretched resources away from the Hawk Fire and put firefighters, residents and more homes at risk. Please don’t be the reason crews have another fire to fight. Stay alert and stay safe.

Hundreds of firefighters are being briefed, organized and deployed to battle the #HawkFire, which has burned thousands of acres around Peavine Mountain and threatened communities across northwest Reno and the North Valleys. The latest official incident update lists 0% containment, with tens of thousands of residents in evacuation or evacuation-warning zones. Homes and other structures have burned, with damage assessments still underway. The fire is confirmed human-caused, though exactly how it started remains under investigation. This is what firefighters are up against outside Reno. The vegetation around the #HawkFire is so dry you can pick it up and pulverize it in your hands. Add low humidity and increasing afternoon winds, and you have conditions primed for wildfire growth. The National Weather Service expects humidity to fall sharply this afternoon as southwest winds increase, with gusts potentially reaching 20–25 mph. Officials continue to report 0% containment, with hundreds of firefighters and additional resources working the fire. This dry brush tells the story. It doesn’t take much for fire to find fuel here.
