This quote from #Illini head coach Bret Bielema after the loss to Purdue stood out to me. "It's just been one of those years, man. Going back to last spring, fall camp, it just seems like we're a group that really has to learn things the hard way." It's entirely possible he just meant because its a group with so many new faces from a year ago, but it almost seems like Coach B knew some time ago that this team might have struggles. We'll hear from Bielema again on Monday in his usual weekly press conference.

Love this from #Illini head coach Brad Underwood - asked if he has any issue/finds it unfair to have to play Houston IN Houston in the Sweet 16. "I could care less... I'm an old JUCO ball coach. I drove on 16 passenger fans. I drove from Dodge City, Kansas to Mesa, Arizona for a basketball game... If you had told me back then that I'm getting to coach basketball in the Sweet 16 and play Houston - I would sign up for it, I would crawl to get there." Don't see this every day: A reporter offered to ask Andrej Stojakovic a question in the postgame press conference in a different language. Andrej suggested they stick to English so the rest of us could understand. He wanted to know if the #Illini junior plans to play for the Serbian national team, plus if he thinks Illinois can compete for a title. "I don't know how anyone could expect me not to say we're going for a National Championship. That's ridiculous if I don't think that we have the confidence to win it all." Underwood jumps in: "Good answer!"

At Big Ten Media Days, #Illini HC Bret Bielema explained why he switched to a 3-3-5 defense. A factor: not able to afford defensive linemen with his budget. "The reason I had to make change on defense was I couldn't afford to pay the the numbers," said Bielema. "I had already gone after an offensive line and had to put money out that I needed to get done for that, and then I knew I could kind of buy, in a way, kind of patch together a new defensive scheme that wouldn't require as big of players. Bielema added, "Because some of those big D linemen, those guys are going for ungodly amount of money, and you just can't have them at the number we were at." Bielema also discussed how some college programs have twice the budget for roster building than other schools. "I'm within $5 million of those guys, I can go to bed every night and I'll feel good. I think I can make that difference, right," said Bielema. "But now you start talking about teams that are double, two and a half times that number. It just it can't happen. It won't happen. I've been able to pull the magic out of the hat a couple times, but like to have that sustainability."

#illini QB Luke Altmyer said some South Carolina players thought they were Syracuse at a combined team event this week. "Been hearing all this talk about SEC, SEC in the playoff and things like that, and I'm just tired of the disrespect. Illinois has been a disrespected program for a long time.
